Hi All

Decided to change my pword before the weekend to keep it safe from smaller hands and then went away for three days. On returning, I brought my PC back from hibernate/standby and did so continuously till today, where I shut it down. Problem is I have NO clue what i set that password as, and I'm pretty sure I left a hint but it doesnt seem to be showing up, so maybe i failed on that one :p

So does anyone know any workarounds? maybe a bootable third party app that kills the password like you would with a second account~? I've already tried using the MS Diagnostics and Recovery toolset but it refuses to recognise 7 as a valid OS for it and therefore will not let me use Locksmith. I only have the one account on the computer, so I cant resolve this through another Admin. Its probably worth noting I have also not made any changes to the status of the Administrator account, but Ive noticed it doesnt come up in Safe Mode anymore.

So please guys, any advice would help (Well, except use decent memorable passwords of course.)

Hi Guys, Thanks for the info, but just to let you know my experience. Tried the boot cd and changed the admin account password. When I logged back in the account had disapeared completely. Just re-installing 7 now. Was kids pc and had only just installed it so not a great problem. Will be creating a restore cd this time.
Anyway keep up the good work guys,
Stu.

Another workaround I can suggest is the ntpasswd bootable ISO.

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

It loads a small linux distro and lets you reset the password of any user to blank, change the password of any user and other useful things.

Tried in XP, VISTA and Windows 7 (all builds) , works fine.
It's a handy , fast tool which I always have with me, booting from my USB stick.
Plus, its free.

Cheers

Method three - a hiccup

Mr. Brink sir - I'm fairly saavy. I was following your instrucitons on Method Three for forgotten password but ran into a snag. I'm working on getting into my wife's new ACER ASPRIRE ONE. It comes with Windows 7 Starter version. I went through the setup steps, set a password, then logged off. Upon trying to login the computer is telling me I forgot the password. I tried method three. As you know the little ACER's don't have a CD drive so I followed instructions for USB drive. I burned the CD with Roxio then tried to copy all the files to a USB stick on the root; however, one of the eleven files that I need is displaying a file name that is just a square. I think that means the character(s) in the file name are for some reason foreign to my computer's OS (I'm running XP on a Dell Precision M90). So my computer won't let me copy that file. The error I get is: "Cannot copy []: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." Please help. Thank you sir. ~ guido

Didn't work for me. No Help at all. I tried the OFFLINE NT PASSWORD & REGISTRY EDITOR about 10 different times on my laptop. I must have spent a total of about 6 hours. I had no problems with burning the .ISO image file with Imgburn and I had no problems changing the boot sequence in bios to read from the CD-rom. I read the fine print extensively EVERY LAST DARN WORD IN MINUTE DETAIL. I am NOT a newbie. To much to explain. I don't have that much time to explain everything. I know I followed every detail EXACTLY as writen. Is there anything else out there that might help??
