Argg...I just wish these free downloads and deals of the day didn't require installation on the same day. I'm very leary of installing anything onto my machine before I can test it and such and simply don't have time today to deal with this. I'm currently a satisfied user of their free offering which does exactly that I need it to do, so all is not lost.

this isn't the full version of dvdfab - it's only the 'dvd copy' part of it, allowing you to save a dvd's file structure to your harddrive.

it's still very good software (especially as it's free!), but you can't rip a dvd to avi using this version, for example.

HandBrake

It doesn't do avi but it does mkv and mp4, which are actually better containers for newer content, avi is aging and doesn't support multi-track audio and hd properly. Handbrake takes a little bit of trial and error to get the best results but it is a super star once you get it figured out.

It's my personal software of choice for backing up my movies and it's ALWAYS FREE

handbrake is good as well - only problem is that it can't rip copyrighted protected material.

so, you could use a free copy of dvdfab hd decrypter (always free) to copy the dvd on your hard-drive, removing all the drm nonsense.

then once the files are free on your hardrive, you can now use handbrake to rip them to mkv or whatever.

On the subject of Handbrake - which I haven't used even once so far -it is said that the nightly build is better. Why? What do most people here use? Is it the regular build or the nightly? ( I have installed only the nightly build).

The nightlies are more in line with their very last minute coding. I've never had issue with the stable version since about .5 ish... before that even the slightest off setting would result in horrible pixelation and bad temporal prediction.
