I would like to add TrID to the list. It's a small command line program that tries to analyze and identify the type of a file by searching for some known distinctive signatures. It shows a list of probable file types found according to its content. Useful for indentifyng what some unknown files actually are.

Zemana Lifetime Licenses

Here's a couple that are good until Sale ends in 3 days 21 hours 25 mins 34 secs as I posts this; The links go to Ashraff's Shareware on Sale (SoS) site, if any one remembers, Ashraff used to review Giveaway of the Day's (GOTD) freebies but he started his DotTech site about 3-4years? ago.

The links take you to the respective pages were you can start the process, clicking on the download zemana link bar takes you to another SoS page where you can choose which zemanz social media you would like to use to get the license.

If you don't like the SoS site check your favorite giveaway site as they may be offering this also.

Vopt9

Another good program is Vopt9 if your looking for a good defragger
The owner passed on and offered up his program for free for anyone that wants it.

You do have to add a .txt file to the program file after install and before the first run, this file is used to register Vopt9. You'll see a small popup each time you start the program, but that is a small price to pay to get the performance this program delivers, and I'm running just the default settings.
My machine is running like a puppy again!

I saved mine as Vopt9reg.txt and placed it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Golden Bow\Vopt 9 and your good to go.

It seems that AllDup is updated quite often. I noticed that if an update is applied then custom settings and custom file filters are lost.

If you open %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\AllDup and backup the config.ini and config4.ini files you can easily restore your custom settings after an update has been applied.

If I ever restore a system image backup on one drive I can end up with duplicates if files that I had already moved to another drive get restored to their original location. Other times I've used file copy instead of cut/ paste. I'm only really interested in duplicates of personal files as it seems to be normal for some software to use duplicates of certain files in different directories and I leave those ones alone.

There is an excellent example of one reason why imaging is not suitable for backing up data files. A folder/file syncing program would avoid this problem. I only image my boot drive and use FreeFileSync to backup my data drives.

Thanks Callender and Jeannie I do regular imaging as a matter of fact and it may be why I am getting "feedback" - most of the duplicity is actually pics and docs and sometimes I find there is even more than two copies even three or four!:huh:

I see SIW still on the list. It doesn't look free to me. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
The 2011 portable apps version is still available (btw not suitable for Windows 8 or 10)
The portable apps old version download link seems to no longer work.
I'm glad I've got a version since it is a good app.
It probably should be deleted from the free list.

For mjf and members about SIW:

It states on the End User License Agreement page that the Home Edition has been discontinued. Clicking on the freeware license link there will take you to the trial version page and that version is only good for 30days.

If you look at the bottom of the developers page for the SIW Trial Version you will see: The Freeware SIW Home Edition has been discontinued.

I have searched and found numerous examples that SIW has not been freeware for several years or more, One example from Gizmo's Freeware dated December 1st, 2013:

Note: SIW has fallen out of favor because the free version is no longer updated, has to upgrade to Pro version to work on Win8 and above systems, the standard installer contains OpenCandy and the free version is no longer present on their homesite.
