Great thread. Would it be possible to put star ratings for each bit of software as a quick guide on the index post so we know if the apps are any good?

I just wanted to let those who like and use (or used to use) Peerguardian know that development has started up again and that there now is a new version of the program available (free), which is called "Peerblock."

Peerblock is based on the original PG code and Peerblock looks just like Peerguardian (and uses the same lists), except it is being actively developed (with frequent application updates) and, most importantly, it has signed drivers. It is completely compatible with Windows 7 x64 without any workarounds required. In short, for those who like Peerguardian, this is a long overdue dream come true.

Swarfega's fine suggestions made me notice the absence of xplorer² (free version) from this list, file manager, dual pane, tabs, viewer, vertical or horizontal panes, single (tracking tree) and god knows what other goodies.

Whilst I love Win7's Explorer I still can't live without xplorer² - elegant, traditional, easy to manipulate files.

hmm thats the lite version. The installer mentions 64-bit but I think thats only available for the retail version which is $29.99.

32 bit version (free) is working good in 64bit windows. I have just downloaded and installed. Really very interesting. I have also downloaded the 64bit TRIAL version and installed in parallel but I don't feel any difference.

Worth a trial.

Good program, looks like. WinAudit has the same info, but in HTML format for the whole report at once, kind of like SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala but with what appears to be more information.

<shrug> There are a bunch of these type of reporting programs out there, it becomes a matter of what you want and the format(s) for the information it would appear.

Winaudit is handy - more for your average user - SIV is 100 times more detailed. SIW is somewhere between the two.

Depends what you are after.

Hi Si,

Not one I was aware of

I tend to set up monitoring with something like Spiceworks for the more complex set-ups but do like to take snapshots at the start of jobs on systems I don't know - before the work of setting up the monitor.

I use SIW and/or belarc plus system information then cobble a report together, If I can find a singe app I will save myself a bit of work

You'll need to play with it a bit - the amount of detail and what you can do with it are overwhelming at first.

It's a long time fave of mine. What a great guy Ray is - doing all that work and letting everyone have it free.

Just had a quick look and it certainly looks interesting - especially as its a live output rather than a snapshot tool - I can see a few uses for initial monitoring and troubleshooting
