It's a touch heavier on memory usage than Foxit - but no big deal. Great app.

Types

It lets you manage what apps will open/preview/edit/print/etc various filetypes -- A feature removed from Vista/7.

“Types” is a free and lightweight utility for Windows that allows you to edit program associations, icons, context menus and other properties of various file types displayed in Explorer.

And here's an alternative if you are looking to fiddle with associations (and as a part time designer I need to edit various image types in a different app than the one I want to get a quick view in) - FileTypesMan from the ever reliable Nirsoft. None of these are great for the newbie - but as long as you are adding rather than taking away the worst that can happen is a bunch of entries in your context menus half a mile long which don't do anything!



Anyway FileTypeMan worked flawlessly and I recommend it. (Can't believe MS left this functionality out - I'm not keen on rooting around in the registry unless I really have to.

Here's one I like that has a very good free version called: Keyscrambler Personal:

The free version protects the most popular browsers as well as some other apps. The paid versions protect additional programs, but obviously, the most improtant thing to protect is the browsers which the free version does. It's just an extra layer of security, in case somehow, a keylogger or similar malware gets into your system.

I've been using this for a while and it certainly seems great. Unfortunately apart from the maker's assurances I have no idea whether it works to obfuscate all Keylogging software.
But at worst it doesn't interfere with my usage of Firefox (or the other software it attaches to) - the software is unobtrusive (just shows me what keystrokes it is encrypting - see image).



And if it really does work this is an incredibly useful layer of security - as the hidden Keylogger is seriously naughty!

Gmail Notifier Plus is an excellent replacement for the Gmail Notifier made by Google.

The Google Gmail Notifier is showing its age, and Gmail Notifier Plus is specifically designed for Windows 7. It takes advantage of the Jump List feature of the Win 7 Taskbar and it automatically logs you in when Windows 7 starts (just put the .exe in the Startup folder in the Start Menu).

It's one of the best applications I found so far for Windows 7. If you use the old Gmail Notifier now, you need to make this upgrade.

well DVDFab as far as i know is NOT free...

DVDFab 6.1.2.5 was released 10/27/09 and it works great on my x64. If you want to use everything that it will do, you have to pay, but if you just want to do the dvd backups and a few custom options then YES it is free. It has the options listed for you to decide.

the windows dvd maker makes dvds (pretty smart naming strategy there by microsoft :sarc, from a limited selection of files stored on your harddrive.

whereas dvdfab rips dvds - ie takes movies from a dvd and sticks them as files onto your harddrive.

there's also a lot wrong with windows dvd maker, but i won't go into that now...

I am also a big fan of DVDFab, for it helped me to convert my library of legally-owned DVDs to ISOs that I now stream from a media server. On-demand video without the cable company.

full disclosure: I quickly upgraded to the payware version of DVDFab after using the free version to support the team.
