If it makes you insert a blank DVD before it will do anything, then it's probably a waste of time. I tried about 3 variations of WinX from GOTD and took them all off my machine the same day.

Some of the conversions will come out looking good. But it only took me about 4 conversions to start getting instances of incorrect aspect ratio etc.. IOW, when you play it you get Fathead TV. Raymond Burr with the padded shoulders didn't have shoulders as wide as the actors in these flicks!!

Just tryin' to save people some stress. There are much better freeware tools around.

Thanks for the feedback. I have no personal experience with this program, just passing along the offer. Would anyone else care to share their experiences?

I have this program, and have not experienced the problems that you have with it. I have not found a encoder that always works, and covers all situations. I use 3 which usually does the job...this program, DVDFab 8 and HandBrake. BTW, this Platinum version is not freeware.

Yes, it is the Platimum version. I believe seekermeister was just reiterating that it wasn't a freeware version since MilesAhead mentioned there were better freeware tools around. Thanks guys for opinions and info. A Guy

However, I have no idea of what the "Kung Fu" edition is? If it is actually the same as the regular Platinum version, or is some kind of lite version of it.

I think it is just because of the release of Kung Fu Panda 2. A marketing device. It is apparently the full Platinum version. A Guy

Just downloaded and installed, can't beat free, and the license key is valid.

Now I have DVDFab8, DVDShrink 3.2, HandBrake, and WinX DVD Ripper.

These tools should be able to copy anything currently on the market.

I know it's not freeware. I'm saying there are better converters around that are freeware. It's better generally to use a converter that lets you output to VIDEO_TS. If there's a minor problem often it can be fixed. If WinX conversion doesn't come out you have to start back at square one loading the source disc in the drive and burn yet another coaster. It's only for people who are determined not to pick up any of the specs or settings to use with DVD. One click good or bad.

I started out with Nero and that's ok up to a point. Then as you go along it starts getting in the way. To get more control and better results you have to invest some time and learn a bit about mumbo jumbo unfortunately.

And once you add in subtitles, forget about it!! That really limits your options.
I like foreign films and the subs are usually the fly in the ointment.

If your DVD player is Divx certified or you use a set top box sometimes it's easier and faster just to use AutoGK with xvid codec and output an .avi file. Most 2 hour films look good at 92% quality one pass encode.

Seems like every time I tried one of the WinX tools, I'd get 2 or 3 good conversions. Then as I tried more films the ones with bad aspect ratio would show. Or the conversion just looked like hell. If the source is really good looking often even a transcode looks great. But to get good results from a good but not great looking source requires a high quality encoder.

I only use it for ripping, and I think that is primarily what it was designed for, considering how it is named. I also do not use it to make DVDs, so I can't comment on that either. My interest has strictly been encoding movies only into a format that I can store and use within the PC, without having to dig through my DVDs.

I have no doubt that there are better programs than this available, but outside of those that I mentioned, I have not found any. When I need to rip a DVD, this encoder is not my first choice, I usually go with DVDFab 8, unless I have problems with it, and then HandBrake, unless the source DVD is encrypted (which most are), if both of these fail, then I use WinX. So far, one of this trio has accomplished the job, and as long as that is true, I probably won't go hunting for anything else, because I got tired of trying one program after another, that I couldn't get decent results from. However, your comment about AutoGK interests me enough that I will probably try it out the next time that I have an encoder job to do.

If this is a rip only then I understand where you are coming from. They seem to insist on a ripper being included no matter what the product line. Adds to the confusion.

AutoGK is mainly useful for encoding the "main movie" of a DVD. It's not so great for episodic type. Where it excels is with the old "letter boxed" DVDs before 16x9 anamorphic was common. It autocrops the movie, then displays it in "postage stamp" mode. If you have an upconverting DVD player that does divx, like Philips as example, with HDMI connection then it will show it in "16x9 mode" with pillars. The postage stamp is a smaller picture than something that resizes, but usually it's much sharper. I think the xvid that comes with it will utilize 2 cores. One pass gets done pretty quickly.
