Solved frequent 404s

win7 prof sp1

in the last 24 hours I'm getting a lot of 404s see screenshot attached below
they are almost instant, <1sec, instead of the usual delay
you can see the 404 page is branded google which I dont understand

at the same time I'm getting a lot of this:
I type a url into the address bar such as whatever.com, press Enter
and the address bar quickly shows instead
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#

This has me completely stumped
It's just on one machine (my laptop) the desktop is fine

I've had a look at system restore, there is something I don't recognise which happened the day before the problem started (and now I come to look happened again this morning)
Install Connect Service
but going back hasn't helped

same problem for firefox IE Chrome (all of them more or less up to date)
malwarebytes doesnt see any problem (nor avast)

I'd be grateful for any help

Actually I posted on bleepingcomputer as well, and was pushed into using their all purpose repair tool, and amazingly, and I don't know how, but it worked!
