Frequent BSOD recently; not sure what caused it.

Sorry for the poor title, but I didn't get enough time to read the BSOD before it restarted the computer.

I have received BSOD 3 times in the past two days (all the same message but it disappears before I can read it). I have received maybe 2 or 3 others in the past couple months but it wasn't often.

Attached are the dumps created with the SF diagnostic tool. Only thing that I noticed that was out of the norm was that my fan seems to be running quite often compared to normal.

I would appreciate any advice as this is relatively a new laptop.

Please uninstall DAEMON Tools/Alcohol 120%. It uses a driver called sptd.sys which is known to cause BSODs in Windows 7. Uninstall the software using Add/Remove Programs. Reboot the system. Once the program is uninstalled, run sptd.sys uninstaller to remove the driver from your system.

As an alternative, many people recommend the use of Total Mounter or Magic ISO
Perform a System File Check to check the integrity of all protected Windows 7 :

1. Click on the start rb:
2. Type CMD on Search
3. Left click and Run as Administrator
4. Type

   SFC /scannow

Disk Check on your hard drive for file system errors and bad sectors on it.

Reduce items at start-up. Nothing except anti-virus is required plus improves the time for logging in windows.

Thank you for the detailed reply koolkat77. It is unfortunate that I must get rid of those two programs as I like them both very much. Do newer versions of the programs cause any issues?

As for anti-virus, you suggest I use both MSE and Malware bytes? Isn't it generally a bad idea to have two anti-virus?

I will print this out and remove them later today. (I'm off to work for now but I can hopefully get to fixing this up tonight!)

Security essentials is an antivirus, Malware bytes is an anti malware app.

You may try the newer version of bit defender but I would suggest you to use MSE for the time being and see if the BSOD-s reoccur.

• Removed Alcohol 120% (BSOD on first attempt to uninstall - restarted in safe mode and uninstalled it)
• Ran tool to disable driver
• Removed BitDefender
• Installed MSE
• Ran MSE
• Installed MalwareBytes AntiMalware
• Ran MalwareBytes (found 2 BHO / browser hijacker and removed them: Trojan.Happili & Trojan.BHO) -- that explains why my browser was so slow and the cache was always 170mb+
• Started SFC /scannow - BSOD again (was browsing on firefox when it happened)

It was doing well for a good amount of time before I got the BSOD again.

Restarting SFC /scannow

To Do:

• SFC /scannow found no issues
• Disk Check
• Reduce Start-up Programs
• Troubleshoot App Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Will keep updating post as I complete each new task.

Another update, SFC scan completed without issues.

I accidentally opened FireFox again (default browser) and surprise, BSOD (same one stop at 0x0000051). Do you think the two BHOs have something to do with this? Perhaps attached to my default browser and caused an issue? I'm using chrome at the moment as a backup.

If FireFox could be the issue, I should be able to keep my bookmarks without issue, correct?

Lastly, I recall why I switched from MalwareBytes to BitDefender...MalwareBytes blocks many sites that I like to use. I never took the time to fix the firewall settings since I didn't want to do it for 2 dozen websites.

I'm also about to start my Disk Check (it will require me to reboot - about to do so)

Could be as the usual causes for that bug check have "security issues" listed.

Disk check went fine.
Removed a few start up apps.
Will look into setting up a clean start up tomorrow.
Going to export bookmarks in firefox, uninstall it, then reinstall it (then head to bed).

Is there any type of log you'll need when I come back tomorrow? (aside from wanting to hear if I'm still getting BSOD when Firefox is reinstalled)

Got BSOD again. Rebooted computer and chrome won't even start up now. (stuck using IE until further notice)

Will check in tomorrow when I wake up. I'm thinking I should start booting up in safe mode with networking.

I started up Verifier as the example shows. I guess I'll have to wait 24 hours to see if I get any results. Should I start up firefox since that is what typically causes the BSOD?

My full MalwareBytes scan produced 4 results, but they were all false positives.

Are there any other things I can do while we wait for the verifier results?

So far I've run Firefox without any BSOD. It seems to be running smoothly from what I've seen so far. I'm about to uninstall Chrome and reinstall it since it won't load up (no GUI shows up).

Are there any anti-virus or anti-malware measures I should take as well? I've run a full MalwareBytes scan but I want to be sure the computer is clean since I need to file taxes soon.

-Kaspersky TDSSKiller

• Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

-ESET online scanner

• Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET

In addition, run the tools referred to in the tutorial below as well as WDO:

I'm looking into running ESET Online tonight.

Am I able to disable the driver verifier now? (It's making my sound come out weird, but no BSOD thus far)

Right now I'm unsure of what was causing the BSOD. The only things that have changed in the time were the removal of the Trojans (BHOs) and the tabs that I had open on firefox were removed due to the uninstall/reinstall of Firefox.

Any idea of what the next step should be?

I've requested for more help from my friends (I hope they post their input as I may have missed something earlier!) but I think we got to wait and see till the next bsod. BCC 51 is not a very common one..!

Strange that verifier didn't pick anything when I was expecting it to :shock:... scary

To rule out hardware failure please do the following:

Run Furmark to test your graphics card FurMark: Graphics Card Stability and Stress Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net

FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature" (BurnIn test in newer versions).
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

Run HD diagnostics to check you Hard drive for problems:

Run memtest86+ for at least 8 passes to test your ram and the ram slots on your MOBO:

And finally run prime95 to test your CPU for errors:
