Dear All,
Old (but reliable) HP laptop. Had no problems.
Did a fresh Windows install. Now regret!
BSOD occurs during mundane tasks, like file copy, or browsing.
Tried the install with thoroughly updated drivers from HP Support. BSOD still occurs.
Then, installed Windows in a minimal "vanilla" state, using only MS Update provided drivers. BSOD.
Ran "Driver Verifier" for 24 hours. BSOD.
Suspect a driver at fault, but which one!?
With thanks for any guidance you can offer.

You have:
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a) A page table page has been corrupted - Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt! ?? ::FNODOBFM::`string'+35084 )
SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION (c1) - Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiCheckSpecialPoolSlop+83 )
I would recommend performing a memory test

Hello, ljk. If you don't mind I will try to help you with your issue. If at any time you do not understand any instructions I give or have any questions about why I am asking you to do a certain thing, feel free to ask. I do not mind explaining or giving you the reasons I request a certain test or instructions.

First if you will, please put your system specs as detailed as possible in 'my System Specs' at the bottom left of your last post. That way it will always be available to me or anyone else who helps in this thread in any post. Also, I would ask, in as much as it is possible with an HP, please be as detailed as possible with Manufacturer and model numbers. I only ask this because we need to look up a component occasionally, and need that information to look up exactly what part you are using. These are the instructions I usually give and may be of considerable help to you in accomplishing that.
Please fill out your System Specs

   Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

You had 2 dump files. One offered no help at all on your issue. The second one did give us some reason. However to test it will require a lot of time. Unfortunately, it is absolutely necessary. This is what your dump file lists:

Please Run Memtest86+
picture.php

   Information
Please download from this site only http://www.memtest.org/ in the middle of the page are the Download links, you can download the ISO.zip or the Auto USB Flash Drive installer.zip

Extract the Zip file. If you chose the ISO image, burn it to a CD using Windows Disk Image Burner or any Image burner you may have. If you downloaded the Auto USB installer, extract it, insert your USB 2.0 Flash Drive and take note of the drive letter. Run the installer, select the Flash Drive Letter, check the format box and press next. It will install memtest86+ to a flash drive. You can use either V4.20 or V5.01. Boot from your selected media. If you use V5.01 it will tell you to press certain buttons at the start, please press no buttons. The test will begin on it's own and continue to run until you stop it. It needs to run for 8 complete passes or until you receive an error. If you receive an error, stop the test. Even 1 error is a fail. Each pass tests a different part of the ram and each of the 10 tests in each pass tests something different. It takes a minimum of 8 passes to completely test the ram, more passes are better. It is quite a long test and will take several hours depending on how much ram you have. Due to the time length it is best to run overnight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask

The test will take several hours to run, so we usually recommend you start it late at night and let it run overnight. You need to run it for a minimum of 8 complete passes, more is always better or until you get an error which will show on the screen as a red line across the bottom of the screen. If at any time you see an error, stop the test by pressing the escape key. Whichever method you choose, you will need to boot into tat media and not into windows. That can be done by using the one time boot menu key or going to BIOS boot options and changing the boot order to have the media you choose for memtest86+ as the first boot device and your hard drive as your second device. Boot into it the same way you booted into the Installation DVD when you reinstalled Windows. Again, if any of these instructions are not clear, feel free to ask. When you download memtest86+ for your system I think version 4.20 would be best. Either download the ZIP file which when unzipped will contain an ISO file which you can burn to disk with Windows Disk Image Burner or any Disk Image burner you may have. But, it must be burned to the CD not copied. Or you could choose the pre compiled USB installer. Whichever you choose will work fine.

Memtest found bad ram

Dear kottl and essenbe,
Firstly, thankyou. Memtest found an error in the RAM.
I swapped sticks, identified the bad one, and have subsequently run Memtest overnight (20 passes) without a fail.
I am unsure whether to yet mark the Thread "Solved"? I am inclined to think you have found the problem, and that it is now fixed, but would like to complete the install of Windows to be confident.
thanks for your help and patience with a noob,
LJK

LJK, that is no problem, take as long as you like. Nobody will push you. I would suggest you buy a whole kit instead of replacing one stick. Kits are tested to work well together, where individual sticks are not. If you go that route, you may want to consider an 8 GB kit (2X4GB) if your motherboard will take those Dimms. That information will be in you motherboard Manual. If you do, I think you will be able to notice a difference in performance.
