Friend's computer cannot connect to my network

BTW, did you ever find out why (or even ask why) the friend's laptop had a static IP assigned to it in the first place? ...just wondering. Sometimes when you are troubleshooting a router, the manual will ask you to assign a static IP to a computer and then connect it to the router in question.

My friend just came back with the computer so I had the chance to make the changes suggested earlier - setting IP address and DNS to automatic. But it still says it is connected to the wireless network but there is no internet. I've attached the screenshot of ipconfig /all.

I am able to connect with a LAN cable.

At one point it gave me the message that "an installed Layer Service Provider (LSP) is malfunctioning. It offered to repair it, did not help, then it removed it. Still did not make a difference.

When I look in Device Manager in Network Adaptors, there is a Microsoft 6to4 adapter that has a yellow exclamation point over it. There is also an Atheros AR5007EG wireless adaptor that is working ok.

Any thoughts on what to try next?

I've just connected another old router I had lying around that I reset to default so it has no encryption, not sure if that makes a difference here or not. But it connects fine to that. Here is a screenshot. I included the entire screen in two shots this time.

I'm hesitant to delete the 6to4 since it is working somewhat now. And what is the 6to4?

So you successfully connected it wirelessly to the old router? I would wonder if your currently in-use router that you're trying to wirelessly connect to is operating on the same band/protocol as her laptop. If your router is set up to only use wireless-N, but her laptop can only do wireless-G it'll never connect. If that's the case you need to reconfigure the router to operate in mixed mode (G+N).

Another thing to check and correct would be the encryption mode. If you're using WPA2 but the laptop can only use WPA or less, it won't connect until you update the laptop's OS/drivers. It's less likely, but I don't know how old and what OS the laptop is.

The 6to4 tunnel adapters allow the newer IPv6 protocol to be used on a IPv4 network. It's a transitional method that is being used as the internet slowly changes from being an IPv4 based network to a IPv6 based network. The creation of extra 6to4 adapters interferes with the connection. Updating network drivers can sometimes prevent the creation of the extra drivers but you've still got to delete the extra ones that were already created.

My current router is not wireless N, but the encryption is WPA2. That could be the issue. I'll look into that next time I have that computer back here.

Make sure that your router's SSID is visible.
If it still wont detect it after that you need to go to " CHANNEL WIDTH ".
Once in Channel Width change the channel to channel 8.
It will show a Ghz frequency on the side of the channel number.

Re-fresh the box on the toolbar on the laptop that searches for routers / networks .
