Does anyone know from where I can access this driver For Win 7?

I have tried RadarSync; but with 5672 drivers under this search term, or at least under IDE ATA/ATAPI, I don't know which one is applicable.

I wouldn't ever trust or feel comfortable with a program telling me about driver updates.

That being said, you always want to go to the source. You don't have your system specs filled in, so I'll just have to give a generic answer. You should check your motherboard manufacturer's website, or Intel's.

Hi deacon,
Yes, you are most likely correct. I have a Vaio, and have asked Sony the same question. No reply since a few days. maybe I need to write them again.

Also Thomas15v; thanks for your suggestion too, but I have already been there, and after using their "driver checker", it does not say anything about this controller, but it mentions an H65 chipset, which I doubt is the same - altho it mayy be- and for a few other drivers, it tells me to see the manufacturer, as their "generic driver may cause problems". Hardly useful; especially as the manufacturer will (usually) say: "see the OEM"!!

So I am going nowhere; especially as this driver checker mentions my Atheros driver, but does not say if it current or not; and I have just recently updated that one.

Regards

I believe that driver is part of the main Intel chipset driver package. I think it is officially called the Chipset Installation Utility. That's what I always install first, and it will detect your H65 and install the necessary pieces.

You could also try this from Intel:

Hi there,

Have you tried the Intel Driver Update Utility suggested above?

it tells me to see the manufacturer, as their "generic driver may cause problems". Hardly useful; especially as the manufacturer will (usually) say: "see the OEM"!!

While this is the case with some hardware components, the SATA AHCI Controller driver from Intel should work just fine.

If this is a desktop computer, you could also look up the motherboard manufacturer's website for the specific driver.

Intel's drivers?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Yes when I did use the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF)
It is what gave me the message I quoted above, when I went into the "more information" within the data supplied about it.
However I did just now check it again, and this is what it tells me

" Intel® HM65 Express Chipset Family
Current Version Installed 9.2.0.1019 "

Now this is incorrect, unless there is some issue with the driver, or this utility's capability to recognise it; because my Device Manager tells me that I have version 10.0.0.1046 installed!
This utility does NOT specify this driver, but when I go to the downloads section in Intel, this driver is listed within HN65 chipset, as you said Deacon.

Also it says that the version is the same as what I have installed, but in the downloads, the date is 06/04/2011; whereas the date I have for this version is 13/09/2010.
So I believe that that, should not be an issue, but why does the Intel utility not recognise the version I have installed AND tells me on its utility that its version 9.2.0.1019 is current, Of course this may be for the HN65 chipset, but if 1 of the drivers from within that chipset has been updated, woudn't the whole chipset package version be updated too?

Also, when I go to the downloads and put in the EXACT driver name from my device manager, which has no mention of "WHQI" or "Raid", it says that the 1 result of my search is

RST_10.0.0.1046_WHQL_RAID_AHCI_drv_and_GUI

There is no mention of these terms in my device manager. I am not looking for a "Raid" driver, but an ATA/ATAPI one

I am confused; BUT it appears that i have the latest version, and I have more important things to pursue,
like setting up a vm on Win 7. I really wanted to ensure my drivers were up to daate before doing that.

So, if you know anything about doing this with Paragon's P2V option with virtualbox, I would appreciate your knowledge.

Cheers

P.S. Yes with a desktop (previously) I have used the mobo manufaturer for drivers, but I have a Vaio; and Sony is very slow in responding to my emails (twice in the last week).

P.P.S Where do I "rep" people?

Well I could suggest trying this one Download Center, it's the latest Intel® Rapid Storage Technology F6 Driver Diskettes and dated 11/11/2011.

Looking in the inf file it states
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C03&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller"
which matches whats written in the OP.

It's just the driver no software. You need to manually update it via Device Manager.

Hi Duzzy,
Yeah, thanks a lot for that link. I appreciate your input.

It seems to be particularly for Raid drivers, and as a pre-installation.

I feel happy, even with all the rigmarole, and conflicting data from Intel, that I have the driver I needed. If I get an error in the future, that necessitates an update, I will pursue it then.

Interestingly, i was looking to see what was on my quick lauch menu, when suddenly "driver max" jumps up on the screen. Did a scan. Told me I needed 19 drivers, [wow!?] including the earlier version of the AHCI driver, AND a more recent one??
I d/l it, but haven't installed it, as I am a little wary of this site's credibility.

The main reason for all this effort is that I want to set up a VM, and I am trying to get the HDD up to spec, in case that becomes an issue.
Of course, the driver I now have may be perfectly fine.

Regards

P.S thanks also for the rep info

The driver I linked to contains the RAID and ACHI drivers and is can be installed fine from within Windows. You can download a exe version, Download Center, but it will install the program as well that is not really necessary but can be beneficial for RAID setups.

Is your SATA controller set as ACHI in the BIOS?

If you can tell us the Vaio model we could look a little deeper into it.

Kegobear and Duzzy

It is a VPCCB15FG i5 2nd gen 2410M CPU

Duzzy I haven't checked if it is set to ACHI in bios, but it just so happens that I have Mr Speccy open, and this is what he says. Maybe - as I don't want to re-boot right now -you can tell me if it does from this data. If not I will re-boot and check.

I understand what you are saying, but I am the kind of person who believes less is more, not just for the sake of it, but because the less stuff you have (anywhere) the less "junk" there is to clog things up, as well as less stuff to wade thru to find something, the less stuff to eliminate when isolating a problem, as well as less stuff to cause problems in the 1st place.
CONsequently, I don't want to install unnecessary stuff, and I have no interest in setting up a Raid drive config. . But thanks for your suggestion and explanation

If you check the link kegobeer post above the latest driver for your chipset is 9.2.0.1019 and the latest SATA driver is 10.0.0.1046 so in fact they are two seperate drivers. Also your specs specify that you do have the Intel® HM65 Express Chipset.

There is no need to create a RAID with the driver I linked to it will work with both RAID and AHCI. It is the latest and it specifies in the inf file "Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller" which was posted in the OP. The zip file is all you'll need, not the exe version.

If you want to try this driver create a restore point first and make sure you can boot the Repair your Computer from the Windows 7 DVD. If you find you can't boot after installing it then use the System Restore from the DVD.

What you are looking for is Intel Rapid Storage technology (<direct link for the installer), however for a non-SSD drive the Windows 7 AHCI driver (9.2.0.1019) is just. In fact, I think it's fine for SSDs too.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and advice. I apologise for the delay in replying. STILL trying to sort out how to clone my xp.

Waiting for Paragon to respond - after 3 emails over the week - about their Go Virtual prog; and trying to determine if setting up my xp drive as a VHD - which saves it as a .vhd file - is a workable option.

Anyhow, I have been on the Sony site. That is where I got most of my drivers from, but was stumped by the HM65 file, and especially its version, which was different to the (specific) AHCI driver version; which was also a later version than the one in the HM65 chipset.

All seems to be settled now. In fact I installed the Gigabit driver yesterday, as I needed it

I would say that this issue is now solved.
Again, thanks for all your help.

Cheers
