From Windows 7 enterprise to a home version

Upon my retirement I could buy my work PC (laptop) running on Windows 7 enterprise. I no longer logon to my former work environment and after 6 months last Saturday, I received an message that my Windows is no genuine. I guess that the license has expired. I am not able to activate. I get error code 0x8007232B

Do I have to buy a new Windows license? Which one do you suggest? Can I do this without going through the pain of a fully new installation?

I understand that Samuria, but I cannot get on the KMS server. What do I do? buy a new Windows? which one?

please use slmgr.vbs /ato
then run KB971033

i added it in possibly during you viewing it

Please advise the message received after you ran it..

If it failed then
you could speak to the IT department at your old workplace, see if they could provide you with the required details to re-activate it

OR
Does your comp have a COA attached, may be in the battery compartment.

Hi Roy,

I ran slmgr.vbs /ato and receive this error message (still the same) see attachment.
There is no COA inside I checked that already.

The problem is I am retired, no longer a staff member and cannot get assistance from my old IT department. I guess I will have to buy my own license and install Windows 7, or 10??? would really dread to do so...I don't see how I can solve this otherwise. Do You?

f you can't find the COA sticker or go back to the IT Department where you worked the only option would be to purchase and install a new Windows OS.

At my ex-work, the IT department bought DELL PCs in large quantities, rips off the original Windows installations and installs Windows 7 Enterprise on all of them. I have a sticker under the battery saying Windows 8 Pro. but there is no key with it; its just a hologram logo nothing more. So I am stuck again.

Hi Kristina,

Looks like the IT dept grabbed your comp, and removed the Server DNS, which it would have validated against, which is usually every 180 days = 6 months.
@bat 1 the key showing in the report is the KMS Enterprise default key, and will show on any OS that has not been set-up or as in this case where the licencing files/DNS server details have been removed.

On a happier note
As this comp was shipped with W8, the licence key is embedded on the motherboard, so irrelevant of what your IT dept has done your the original product key is still on your system

Enterprise is only activated via Kms server so you will need to buy a new copy and do a clean install

Didn't get much sleep last night and I deleted the post as soon as I realized my mistake :o but it was too late. I'm a Win 8 user so I'd definitely recommend installing it. OP could also grab the Win 10 Free upgrade before it ends.

you might have got really lucky.
As it came with W8 Pro, there were also downgrade rights to W7 Pro.
(off course W10 is also an option the free upgrade is still available)

You have options.

1. Install win8 Pro or 8.1 Pro or win10 Pro - there should be a win8 pro code in the firmware that would be fine for any of those.

2. Or, you could go to the Dell site and see about "downgrade rights" from your win8 pro license to win 7 Pro.

It should be possible to use a variant of a repair install to change your 7 Ent to 7 Pro ( thereby avoiding clean reinstall ) - but you will need a to get license win 7 Pro first - try asking Dell for 7 pro license as mentioned above.

Hi Roy,

I ran the ShowKeyPlus tool and it DOES NOT SHOW a Windows 8 key, but confirms the Windows 7 enterprise key... Strange.

So there we are again at the start. If you still see an option to avoid reinstalling my pc completely, you are very welcome to give me your recommendations.

If you get a win 7 Pro license ( possibly through Dell ) then you can do this:

Change these reg entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionID "Enterprise"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName "Windows 7 Enterprise"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionID "Enterprise"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName "Windows 7 Enterprise"

To these:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionID "Professional"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName "Windows 7 Professional"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionID "Professional"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName "Windows 7 Professional"

Then from within your currently running windows ( do not boot the install media) run Setup.exe from Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit install media. When prompted, choose the "Upgrade" option, ( do not get the latest updates from Microsoft when asked, it takes too long ).

When it has "upgraded" , you can enter your 7 pro product key.


[You can up/down any edition using that method.]

Input the serviceTag ID, hopefully your old company registered it

if they did what does it say.

As for the results from Showkeyplus im currently speaking to him about the results
they dont look right.
Can you confirm your running a 64Bit version of the OS
and is Chrome 32 or 64, (see in programs&Features)

If your receiving a pension from your old company, they (I.T) might be a bit more lenient;)
