Hello everybody here. First I must say this. I don't have Windows 7 yet;):p. I have it soon when I get new machine as present:D. I registered here because I need some info about compatibility issues in Windows 7.

Question 1:
At your list these game work in 62bit only: Battlefield Series, C&C Series. Do they work in 32bit also?

Question 2:
How about 16bit programs in 64bit OS. Any problems here:huh:.

Like:
Syndicate(OLD PC game)
Wolfenstein 3D(OLD DOS Version)
DOOM 1 and 2(DOS ALSO)
S.W.O.T.L (DOS ALSO)
Axis and Allies(Win 95)
Duke Nukem 3D
Destroyer command (WIN 95)
Deer hunter 4(WIN 95)
Unreal(WIN 95)
Trophy Hunter 2003(WIN 95)
Steel Panthers :World at War
Delta Force Series
Steel Beasts(WIN 95)

List goes on and on. Any luck with these programs on 64bit?

There are some useful FREE emulators. Like VDMSound, Abandonloader and others. Maybe these will help me here.

You will not be able run most 16bit programs natively. The only way you can be able to run them is through a Virtual PC (ie. Virtual XP Mode). http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8247-windows-xp-mode-install-setup.html

I don't know anything with those emulators. But Running those games with DOSBOX or Virtual XP Mode will likely work. Hopefully, someone will reply to you sooner if anyone does know about those emulators.

Well, as Influx said, DOSBOX is probably your best option for running pre-XP games on 7. The only game on that list that works for me fine on 7 Home Premium is Unreal Tournament. If any of the games you like run on older Macintosh software, I suggest Basilisk II or Sheepshaver (I can give you some links once I get off a phone and on a computer.)

Sheepshaver is Mac software. No go. I use PC software only.

Sheepshaver also requires Mac OS to function. No go again.

I cannot believe that people still sit around playing all of these old games.

Question:
Can VDMSound emulatonr run on windows 7?

When I start installing games I will report here and tell what happens. Trial and error is best way to try this.;)

Because there are tons of new games which are, well new. Seems to me like the old games would get boring and people would want to play something new.

I think I try to solve this problem myself and report here what happens. As I posted before: Trial and error is best way to try this. Only good way here.

The virtual environment is not really suited towards games. It's meant more for productivity apps. Most people aren't very happy with gaming performance.

I heard that Windows Virtual PC does not support 3D acceleration. Is this true?

It does not. Virtual box and the new versions of vmware do, but it's more suited towards Aero and not gaming. Fortunately, they are all free to try, so you can find out for sure how it will work.

Sheepshaver is Mac software. No go. I use PC software only.

Sheepshaver also requires Mac OS to function. No go again.

First off, IMO the best classic games to ever hit the computer were on classic mac. It barely even feels like older mac compared to older windows.

Also sheepshaver can be easily run on PC, it's just not as easy to setup up compared to Basilisk II, which is still reasonably tough.

It speaks volumes about the quality of "old" games that people go to great lengths, including actually writing emulators to run them on modern systems. Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Privateer, Wizardry 8, Crusader: No Remorse, SSI's Gold Box games, etc.

They were written in an age where shelling out $60 for something actually meant getting $60 worth of something. Sure, there were turkeys then as well as now, but previously you could just grab any random box from the store shelf and expect to be reasonably happy, as opposed to now where you'd be crazy to do that without doing extensive research looking up user reviews, patch notes, and youtube gameplay videos.

You're right, though, playing something repeatedly so many times can get boring. So we cycle between all the games we have :)

So true, I remember I could grab a random PS2 (mind you this is early into the life of the PS2) or PC game and I wouldn't get bored with it fast. Hell, I still have a good amount of those old PC games, Marathon, Myth, etc. It's kind of das to see where the gaming industry has gone in the past few years.
