Gap at top of program window, even when maximized

I just got a new laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. When I start it, and open up internet explorer, the program is fine and fully maximized. However when I go and close the lid, then open it again, I find a 1cm gap has appeared at the top of the program window where I can see the desktop (all three buttons still there). Then I cannot get it to fully maximize (it said it was fully maximized with the gap) until I log on again, or restart. Any suggestions. I am guessing this is a software issue, not a hardware issue right? I should say this only happens with certain programms (IE9, Paint, document explorer, picture explorer etc.) but not with others like dell webcam control.

size check

1 cm is the size of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, is it that big really? 1 cm!? wow. Measure it if it is exact, right down to the pixel, may be under the task bar the second time!? can you see the bottom scroll bar arrow when it has the gap present?

and try minimizing the 1st IE window NOT closing it, then opening a second one seperate (NOT JUST A NEW TAB) does the gap presist

If you feel comfortable moving the taskbar to the left or right of the screen. locking it. restart compter. open IE. Close IE. Open IE again... does the side of the maximized window have a gap now or the top, this can help rule some things in or out.

there may be 2 different sources for screen prameters (including a faulty height on one that negates the taskbar...)

reguards,
mike

In my experience, IE is one app in particular that will never properly open a maximized window - not when it was maximized the last time you closed it, and not even when you set it to 'Maximized' in the shortcut properties. I've never understood why this is - I've seen it on every Windows system I ever laid eyes on.
Don't have a solution I'm afraid...

funny thing i have never rememered seeing such things and I've been a computer problem solver for hire for many years... bluntly i started (free of course) w/win 2.0 and 3.10, it's like we both got gump choc-o-lets and you got the whitman sampler and i got the one where every single one is a chocolate covered cherry. (ha):sarc:

  • what solution(s) if any have you found?
  • do you anticipate normal fxn, same fxn or side turnication if he moves the taskbar to the side (answer before he replys or its no good!)
  • and i had forgot to ask the thread starter, but for both of you what effect does going "full screen" have on the situation, then switch back!?
  • or restart explorer (not ie) after it starts and see if that restarts the cycle!?

i could get it if i could touch the thing! ... i think...maybe

Sorry, the gap is a bit less that 1cm, and a lot smaller than the height of the taskbar, the down arrow is still there, nothing is cut off. It's not just IE9, it'll happen with paint and others.

I asked on a forum before, and one of the guys said to click on the taskbar, and drag it up to the top of an open window. I did this with a window (with a gap) and nothing happened. I then logged back on again and did it to a fully open window, and it makes the gap appear if I do that!!!

it's hard without my fingers touching it, so im going by answers so my questionS
I really want to know the results of moving the taskbar to the side of the screen on the problem and any altered effects it has. Can you do that, or would you like a discription of the "how-to's" of this request. I have NO probs if you want/need the play by play.

Secondly open ie,2 times or until it is maximized w/ the gap and goto full screen mode if you press f11 it might do the trick, otherwise click on a blank part of the page and then press f11

reply w/results

thanks man,
mike:)

reply again to corizon

sorry corizon, i though you ment his exact problem unable to maximize even after opening ie. you meen in props under open win as "maxim..d" never works for ie, and your right, just try opening 2 ie windows maxing the 2nd one and closing it (the maxed one)open a third and it should be maxedclose it and the first in that order - now each one should open maxed (until you close a normal one in the presence of a second and then the tricks over!:D

thanks, and sorry,
mike

Tried all of your suggestions. Unfortunately it seems once the gap appears, I cannot get it to become fully sized again. I might just get another copy of windows 7.

if the problem was certian to present on another computer, I'd swap out a new copy of w7 to crack the mystery, but to bypass the bios lock and rework all the drivers makes it unlikely to transfer with the problem attached and im to buzy these days to invest that kinda time/resources , sorry.

so when you moved the task bar the gap stayed on top and it it stayed it same size then the window increased in height by the size of the taskbar since it no longer is at the bottom "pushing" up the window base.

if you are going to have to reinstall (or repurchase) win7 and its related to an incompatability between your graphics card and the win7 environment, then it won't help. but since you are anyway would you mind me seeing it first hand via VPN? IOW connect remotely to help and see and learn. Of course you can disconnect me at any second by button or by simply pulling your network cord or shutting off the wireless connection.

go/no go?

i usually use logmein to make the secure connection and i use it to remotely work on all my clients' computers like when i get a call at 4am with one of them asking "I think i just got a virus...should i click ok or cancel?" I merely forbid them from touching anything and log on and fix the problem from my home/shop/anywhere

lemme know

sincerely,
mike
