I have a gateway desktop computer which was running vista. I upgrated to Windows 7 and all seemed to go well. On the final reboot it looked like it was booting vista but failed and System Recovery options box apeared. If I choose Startup Repair it get Startup repair in not compatible with this version of windows. If I boot from the windows 7 cd and choose repair system then choose Startup Repair if finds no error. I thought about trying it install windows 7 again and see how it goes. Is there a way to remove programs from the startup from the command prompt? I think Gateway may have some restore crap running on startup.

niteman,
Welcome to SevenForums.

Now there are two things you can do to help us help you:
1. fill in your system specs
2. attach a maximized Disk Management output snapshot.

Also are you trying to dual-boot?

Here's info for you.
________________________________________

HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR SYSTEM SPECS

In the line at the top of www.SevenForums.com you will see UserCP.
That is an abbreviation for User Control Panel.
Click on UserCP.
In the left-hand column, under Your Profile you will see Edit System Spec.
Click on Edit System Spec
You can copy and paste from the output of Speccy, Speccy - System Information - Free Download to fill out much of the info. Be sure to use the Other Info section of your System Specs for such info as your optical drive, your wireless adapter, your speakers, etc.

________________________________________
To maka a snapshot of the maximized output of Disk Management, use the Snipping tool:
WIN | type SNIP | ENTER

To run Disk Management,
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER

To maximize the output of disk managment,
open disk managment
ALT + Spacebar key combo, X key
or you can always click on that middle wierd icon on the right-hand side.

To attach a snapshot to your next post:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-how-post-screenshot-seven-forums.html

WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

Delete and create hd partition. If you have more than one drive, make sure you're booting off the correct one. Make sure there are NOT two partitions and you are dual booting.

No I am not trying to dual boot. I had vista I upgraded to windows 7 now the computer is still trying to boot to vista but it fails and goes to the syste recovery options. I do not want to format and reistall I know how to do that if I have to. I have installed windows 7 on several desktops and laptops without problems.

Correct, which is why we need that Disk Management snapshot. That way we can make a correct recommendation.

Have a look here: type msconfig into start/search and hit Enter > click the Boot tab > if you still see a Vista there, delete it.

He can't boot 7 to Repair Install or post a screenie.

If you have your data all backed up (as you should) then your best approach now is to wipe the HD using the tutorial BFK linked to do the cleanest possible install without factory code interference.

It's too late now to remind you to make your Vista Recovery Disks off the Recovery partition, unless you want to run it from boot (using key given on first boot screen) to get back into factory install to make Recovery Disks. Then I'd still wipe the HD for cleanest possible Win7 install.

Thanks guys but I am not at the point of wiping everything and installing clean. I I do this it will be on a new hard drive. But I think Gateway has some program in the startup causing this may be wrong. Is there a way to remove startup programs from the command prompt in windows 7.

Collectively, we have seen many different computers and many different problems.

You have received an excellent recommendation from Bare Foot Kid and two of us have also concurred with his recommendation.

Boot Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD, make sure Win7 partition is marked Active using Diskpart from the Command Prompt: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html

Now boot back into DVD Repair or Repair CD, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots. This does not count any Repair offered when you first boot into Repair Console, ignore the messages as they may distract you from going to Startup Repair to run it 3 times with reboots.

If this fails, return to the Command Line and type bootsect.exe /fixboot and bootsect.exe /fixmbr to try to jumpstart Startup Repair, then run it 3 separate times again.

If this fails, please again run Diskpart from DVD/CD Command Line, type List disk, then Detail Disk and post back everything it says.

Well I have installed the new hard drive and loaded windows 7 and started the long process of recreating the computer I had. Got all five users setup and got outlook installed for the wife to check her e-mail. Even got her e-mails and contacts from the original drive. I know a clean install is alway better was just to lazy to do it on this computer. So thanks to all.
