GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 specs finally exposed

wow that looks like it will be a large video card...I don't know if I would be able to fit in my case

That's one of the other reasons I'm going for the 470 apart from price. It looks considerably smaller and I don't want to risk getting a 480 only to have it not fit lol.

I should be able to if I move my HDD, but even then it will still be a hard call

Same length as an 8800 Ultra then, and I remember that card was tight fit in my case when I was testing a friends to see if it had died.

Well my card is a 9800gt which is 9.0 inches long. So the new cards will atleast be 1/2inch to 1 1/2 inch longer

The end result is we get to buy better cards some time later this year.


As for now, I do not know as to why I need to buy new cards for anyway !

Intel and Nvidia are industry standard. If you are an enthusiast and want an absolute top of the line product, Nvidia is the brand to go with. ATI is a generic and more affordable option, not saying the performance is bad, but substandard when refering to "top of the line"

$499 US for a 480... after currency conversion and re-sellers adding their mark up, plus the initial supply will outweigh demand - that equates to ouch in AUS dollars.

They'll cost around $1100 AUD, which is approximately $1000 USD.
Ordering from folks in US will save me at least $400 USD.

It's nothing to do with low yields. It's because the 512 cores needed a TDP of 295w, which is very high for a single card, so to not cause any problems, they've lowered them to 480 cores with a lower TDP for the initial launch.

The only thing dissuading me from getting help from someone overseas would be potential RMA/Warranty issues...

Always leave room to move. Still, a potential 300w+ TDP for future models is one hell of a hungry beast :shock:

After the initial problems with the ATI 40nm process, the fabrication 'issues' at taiwan were supposedly ironed out.

Although since ATi are releasing the 5830 which is basically a crippled, lower binned 5850 for the masses, you have to wonder if the fabrication process is still producing poor yields for both camps.

Be interesting to see what they come out with later on though, like the GTX260 was raised from 192 cores to 216 cores as well.

Which is exactly one reason why I wouldn't seriously consider one of these cards at launch. I'd be very unhappy to fork out so much, only to discover a quicker and better revision came out not long afterwards.

I've got the card upgrade itch though - so must fight temptation

I'm just going to settle for a 470 either way, as a 480 is too expensive for me while in University.

Though at the end of it, no matter what the power consumption or temperatures are, all a lot of people are going to be bothered about is how fast they are overall.

I'm just ignoring anything at the moment and waiting to see what actually happens tomorrow. Because there's also places saying Nvidia has more cards ready than what ATI had when the 5000 series were released.

I know for a fact scan.co.uk in the UK have cards ready, because they're doing a "try before you buy" tomorrow and Saturday and are demonstrating cards.
