:mad:Having upgrade from Win 7 pro to 10 and win 10 being activated since the 29th July, I decided to revert back to 7. Having removed the Windows.old from my drive I had to do a clean install. That's when the trouble started. I installed win 7 pro and tried to activate it, only to be told that my product number was blocked.

I have in front of me the boxed Windows 7 pro, bought a good few years ago with the legit product number.
So I contacted Microsoft only to be told that my product number was counterfeit. At no time was my copy anything other than genuine. In the system page it was always shown as a genuine Microsoft product.

So it looks like Microsoft has screwed me over. Just to be clear this Win 7 was purchased from a reputable dealer, no ebay or second rate sites.
So I'm snookered, I either stay with 10 or buy another copy of Win pro.

Did MS tell you that your Win 7 key was outright counterfeit---which would mean that it was never legit, even months ago before you even considered Windows 10?

Or did they tell you that the Windows 7 key was simply blocked for an unknown reason? Or no longer valid although it may have been at one time?

I assume you talked to a human being? Did that one human make the decision on his own? I'm wondering if you'd have got a different result if you had lucked out and got someone else on the phone.

This is one of the things that keeps me reticent about Windows 10.

Too late now, but I wonder if an image restoration of your Windows 7 installation would have necessarily been successful.

He told me that my product number was blocked because it was counterfeit. Which, considering that I have reinstalled Win 7 many times in the past and had no trouble in activating the product leeds me to believe that MS doesn't want you to revert back to win 7.

I highly doubt they're lying to you so you don't go back to Windows 7. You paid for Windows 7, and didn't pay for 10, why would they care? They have your money already. Did you try calling back and getting someone else to try and verify your product key? Who is this "reputable" dealer you bought it from? Was it a chain store? A friend?

The dealer was Scan International a highly reputable dealer here in the UK. My question is, if this product number is not genuine then why have I had no problems activating Win 7 in the past. Also Win 10 is also activated and no problems with that.
I made this point to the guy at Microsoft and guess what - he couldn't answer that. He said to buy another license.

Again, I would try calling back a couple times to see if you can get someone else. If they all say the same thing then maybe something fishy is going on, but I would try again before I got too upset. If they keep giving you the run around, then get angry lol!

Thanks for your replies, I'm not really surprised at the lack of help from Microsoft, but I have no intentions of buying another copy of 7. It appears that they do not want you to revert back to your previous OS and in my case are making as difficult as possible. I will contact them again and explain the problem, if the outcome is the same then I'll have to stay with 10.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ne-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

The DVD reference you give is for an RTM disk, I believe - the installed OS is at SP1 level.

Your best bet is to attempt telephone activation and speak to an operator.
The installed Key is a Retail Key (and I use Scan myself for some stuff - so I know they are reputable) - there is the possibility that you've misread a character from the Proof of License card, or that the Key you have is one which isn't valid for installing on SP1 (MS changed the algorithm for SP1, and this invalidated a number of Keys, although they still work for RTM installs)

Until the machine goes out of grace, I can't tell you much more than that - although it may help if you install KB971033 and post the MGADiag again, I suspect it will tell us nothing new yet.

When you speak to the operator - ask these questions if they tell you it's blocked, still

1) When was it blocked?
2) Why was it blocked? - too many activations?/Abuse?/multiple machines?
3) what type of block is it? (There are at least three different types)
4) what type of Key is it? (upgrade or Full? - although your packaging should state this!)

If you have the relevant paperwork - receipts, case, POL card, etc, ask if they will issue a new Key.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Thanks for the reply. I have activated my copy of win 7Pro with a slip streamed copy including SP1 without any problems in the past. Also my copy is a full version and not an upgrade. I have the box it came in and the card with the license, but no receipt. I will contact MS again as you suggest and see what they can or will do. At the moment i'm running Win 10 Pro and Win 7 is on my spare SSD.
