Getting back on Windows 7

Hi,

So you might have noticed the notice hanging on top of this forum. Well, I'll be damned, Windows 10 will create more problems for me then any other OS ever could. I follow some nice tech blogs and every second post about Windows 10 discusses how Microsoft messed it up......

....besides, Who wants to use a beta software* and allow a greedy corporation to use their disk, system resources and network for improving the spying capabilities while reducing your administrative privileges. That's where Windows 10 is headed. If you care about having control over your system and keeping your things private, you have no future with it.

Moreover, who wants to re-do everything from settings to personalization to compatible drivers every 6 months, not me. There's also a life beyond computers.

Now that Windows 7 is going out of support is the best time to get the FINAL version instead of Windows 10 which is essentially always "updating, breaking then updating again to fix what previous updates broke" Endless cycle.

Thank God, there will be no more, updates, hotfixes, telemetry. It will be the system that I will have a full control over. Also, there will be less malware targeting Windows 7.

* forced updates and mandatory telemetry are the benchmarks of the beta software. If any Windows 10 release was stable, there wouldn't be mandatory telemetry to see what's going on and forced updates to get around it.

Thank you for reading. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Welcome back.

Buy a 120G SSD (~US$ 25) and a HDD caddy (~US$ 5) to install / replace the ODD. Do a clean install on the SSD and move (Using Kari tutorial) C:/Users from the SSD to D:/Users on the HDD. You will have the speed of a SSD and the space of a HDD at low cost.

Last week a friend brought me a laptop that was taking almost 4 minutes to boot.
I've installed the SSD in the HDD place and installed the HDD on a caddy in the ODD place.

With the SSD it's now taking 30 sec to boot.

120G should be more than enough to install windows and programs if you move the users folder from the SSD (C:\Users) to the HDD (D:\Users).
Use Kari tutorial. I can guide you as I've done it many times

An 2.5" SSD is around 6 times faster than a HDD.
If you have a boot in less than a minute, you probably don't have a antivirus and other security programs loading at startup.

Yes, I don't have an Anti-Virus or any other programs pinned at startup. Except for the Realtek audio driver. I agree with you though, it's much better to get an SSD. I'll do when I have the money. It won't just be an SSD but new graphics card too.

You don't have to wait until the last day to get a "final" win7, just disable updates and it'll stay stable for as long as you want, as you control updates and not the other way around.

Besides, forcing updates and telemetry has nothing to do with beta software. They're bad practices promoted under a fake good intention to take control.of yor computer and leave with less choices, ending up with an inferior OS. Also the greedy part you mention plays an important part, as Microsoft is desperate trying to steal.private things for selling to the best bid, a nefarious practice copied from other giants in a lame attempt to make money out of the user.
But beta software is a completely different thing, and it's fine as long as the user is properly informed and explicitly consented its use.

you probably don't have a antivirus and other security programs loading at startup.

That's a good thing in itself, in addition to get a cleaner and faster computer.

That looks more like an advertisement than a serious comparison and justifications of why one should use Linux over Windows (more like a fanboy excuse). While some points are defintely true and good, others if not most, are rubish. I would seriously doubt Linux can fully replace Windows, it greaty depends on usage.

I've tried Linux and I can say without any reservations, that it WON'T work for me! It might as well be Commodore Basic.

Most of the complaints I hear about Windows 10, revolve around the failure to properly set it up, right out of the box. Two big security holes are WUDO and Cortana. I disable both during the initial setup.
Those things have been cussed and discussed many times on the Win-10 forum.

Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 don't have those things, and are much nicer and safer OS's. If I were ever forced to stop using Windows 7, (I can't imagine why) my next choice would be Windows 8.1/Pro/64. I just downloaded the very latest version of it, (for testing purposes only) and it's really a nice OS. Installing The Classic Shell, makes it even nicer.;)

Cheers Mates!

Thank you for the response. While I agree with what you say, I still firmly hold the opinion that Windows 10 is a beta software. Judging only by the frequency of the flaws it has, there's no other conclusion to be drawn. I think this might have to do with shipping things every six months. But I might be wrong here as the LTSC versions have equally large number of flaws.

Linux no doubt has a clear advantage over Windows but I fear I'm not ready for it yet. I need to have double boot to install some distro (KAOS?) along side windows and learn it. As I write about it I think I'm gonna do just that.

Thank you bringing this to my attention.

Windows 8.1 is indeed a tad better then Windows 7. If you slim it out enough including Windows store, it's juts like Windows 7 with a bit better kernal, audio processing backend and new shell they call "Ribbon"

Apart from Windows 7, 8.1 is a good alternative.
