Getting BSOD every few minutes, problem with modidras.sys

There are programs which check for driver updates but I can't recommend one. All I have used do show drivers for hardware I don't have or want money for them. Never pay for a driver.

I bought a can of compressed air today and tried to open the laptop but I was unable to do so because 2 screws were stuck .

I used the compressed air to clean the dust and so far it emits less heat than before.

I will do the other tests over night and feed you back.

I ran Windows defender offline quick scan now and there were no issues, or at least I think so as I was not prompted that there's any threat.

Do you recommend running a full scan ?

I think it'll take me another night for that.

I ran memtest86 and after 90 minutes the laptop shut down.

I went to check and found extensive heat from underneath.

I don't have a cooling pad so I put two small blocks under the laptop to give some space for cooling and restarted memtest86, hopefully it will finish without problems :-(

You may have other issues, memtest creates very, very, little heat. See if your vent are clogged with dust, blow it out if so.

The test is still running after 9 hours,and it's on the beginning of the 5th pass with no errors so far.

After a couple of hours I'll start the Windows Defender Offline full scan and feed you back.

I have a question here, just in case I ended up without solving the problem.

My laptop didn't came with a separate windows CD, it came with a utility to take a backup of the existing system at that time, and I took my first back up a couple of months later.

I don't want to restore from the backup, I want to install a fresh copy, so if I can get a copy of windows 7 without a key and use the key that came with my laptop, will that be OK ? i mean will that copy identify my key, supposing that both copies are Home Premium.

Yes, you can create your own w7 DVD and use the key from the sticker somewhere on your machine.

Last night I ran windows defender offline and it found a few threats ( 3 or 4 ) one of them was a worm and the others were mal-ware, I deleted all of them and the status was Succeeded.

I ran another full scan that ended up clean.

Now I was working normally to check if I will get the BSOD or not, windows explorer hung a few times and this is not the first time during the past 2 days but may be this was the worst.

After a while both symatec end point and Security essentials reported that they found threats.

Symantec found 3, one of them was sality32 or something like that and w32/taterf.gen!e

Security Essentials reported one threat and that is w32/taterf.gen!e

I removed all threats reported on both.

Any suggestion to further check for that worm and completely removing it ?

I'll try spyware doctor until I get a reply from you.

I didn't do any scans as Spyware doctor detects them then needs a registration to fix.

I had another issue with SEP as all the components disappeared from SEP interface except for the Network Threat Protection, which was also not enabled on Security Essentials.

I tried to remove SEP but it was not there in the programs list and I had a hard time finding a solution for that until I came across Cleanwipe which is a tool made by Symantec for such cases and it's not available for public download.

I ended up removing SEP and having only Security Essentials which I really doubt it's abilities.

Should I get another antivirus software like Kaspersky or ESET ? Should I get some anti-spyware like Spyware Doctor? Are there any free & reliable anti-spyware? Please let me know what do you think.

I personally use Norton Internet Security with good success and no problems. This Security Essentials, is that Microsoft Security Essentials, MSE? It and Norton can conflict.

In my sig are links to MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware, download each, update and run full scan, separately with each. Make sure you UNcheck Start 30 day trial on MBAM.

If you have paid Norton stay with it, unless it is only the AV, then get a suite with AV and firewall.

Yes, I meant MS Security Essentials.

Today I bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and tried to install it but the installation failed after it asked for removal of MSE.

I tried Kaspersky Virus removal tool as recommended by Kaspersky but it didn't find any threats.

Further more, I downloaded Kaspersky Rescue Disk to a bootable flash memory and run a scan that could only find 23 items in SEP's Quarantine folder, I deleted all of them.

I still can't install KIS 2013 and I have contacted KIS support for that but they didn't reply yet.

I had to reinstall MSE again.

One last thing, I downloaded a copy of windows 7 and while burning it to a flash memory, it gave me an error before it finishes .

I can't remember the exact error phrase but it was a problem making or verifying the boot.ini file.

I tried that on a different laptop, any hints ?

Also in my sig is a link to Revo Uninstaller, try it and remove Spyware Doctor. For the w7 iso, you might try downloading it again, sometimes the first one is corrupt for unknown reasons and use something to burn the image to the flash stick.

I'll give a shout to someone who know Kaspersky.

Spyware doctor was uninstalled no problem with it.

For the ISO, I'll just give it a try like that in a vm if I can boot the vm from a flash.

If it goes well, I'll try that with my laptop.

I read somewhere a feedback from one who had the exact same problem and then he booted from the flash memory normally and windows was installed.

The error is not with boot.ini, it's with bootsect which makes the flash memory bootable.

Update:

During my attempts to install KIS 2013, I downloaded Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a flash memory and ran a full scan overnight that resulted in 2 threats (basically the same virus but in 2 different winrar files).

I deleted them and restarted and was still trying to figure out how to install KIS 2013.

After one failed attempt of installation, I had a windows firewall prompt to allow KIS traffic..........that was after the installation failed not during the installation.

I turned off Windows Firewall and tried to reinstall but it failed again.

Then I was notified that there are new updates available for windows and I was able to install them

That was the origin of the problem, not being able to run windows update and the problem developed as described here in this thread when I followed some instructions on MS Answers website.


Yet, I'm unable to install KIS 2013 and I have to admit that the response of their support is really disappointing. I created the support case more than 12 hours ago and so far there's no single response.

Norton used to have real time chat support with remote assistance option as I recall.


Note, Kaspersky Rescue Disk performed better than ESET & windows defender offline and was able to discover the threat I mentioned earlier.
