Getting HDMI output on Windows 7

Hi there,

I'm having trouble getting my PC to output to HDMI using 32 Bit Windows 7.

When connected via HDMI the screen shows the POST/BIOS however the sides are cut off. Then it shows the 'starting windows' screen but after this it cuts off and shows 'no signal'.

I have a Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H motherboard with an Intel G45/G43 Express Chipset and all of the drivers are up to date.

I spoke to someone from Intel who looked into the issue further and thought that the problem was that the driver wasn't picking up the digital part of the TV as it wasn't reading the EDID properly. He couldn't however offer a solution.

I have a similar issue with my Asus board. I ended up having to plug in a VGA cable to the motherboard. Cable doesn't connect to anything else, just the motherboard and the other end sits behind the machine.

If I unplug the VGA cable picture either starts to flicker on and off on the TV or just goes away, plug the VGA cable back in and all works great again.

Just tried that but unfortunately no luck

There seems to be a lot of stuff on other message boards to do with EDID issues but they seem to be limited to issues with Nvidia.

OK, it will boot into safe mode using HDMI at 1024x768 fine but as soon as I put it up to 1280x1024 it displays 'no signal' again. Seems to be definitely a problem with the resolutions.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

You might try going into the settings for the monitor itself and look for something related to HDMI functionality.

If you are successful with it at 1024x768 you might want to use that setting then go to the monitor properties and see what other resolutions it shows available. I would try whatever resolution you think you could live with for the moment if one comes up that stays stable.

I would then go and do a Microsoft Update and be sure you include drivers other than Microsoft so that if your TV/Monitor has drivers out there it will pick them up as well as your video card.

I have a Vizio 37" 1080 HDTV that makes you use the VGA input for PC video so I use a VGA to DVI adapter to do this but it does a full 1920x1200 screen w/o issue, the HDMi does feed the audio portion or I can opt to use the Toslink fiber connection from my sound card which I run trough my digital amp.

There are no settings on the television itself regarding HDMI.

It won't boot into any resolution in normal mode, only in safe mode so I'm assuming it has to be to do with something it's loading up in normal mode. As it only offers me three resolutions in safe mode there's not much else I can try there.

The guy at Intel seemed pretty certain it was to do with the digital portion of the EDID not being read and this seems possible looking at the information above as the HD resolutions are shown as timings supported.

Everything is fine up until windows kicks in and then the signal cuts out which suggests it's something on the computer rather than the screen as far as I can tell.

When you boot into Safe Mode what is the signal it reports from your TV, is it 59 or 60 Hz? I'm not familiar with your TV but if anything like my Vizio there are resolution setting in the menu which has nothing to do with HDMI just with the setting when used other than a TV.
You may have to force your video to keep the signal as DEFAULT then it should boot into Normal Mode.

My TV is an LG 22LS4R which unfortunately has a very limited settings menu.

Windows XP used to recognise the monitor and its model number but Windows 7 seems to just recognise it as a Generic PnP Monitor.

How do I know what signal it is reporting when in safe mode?

And how do I get it to keep the signal as default?

Right mouse button click on your desktop brings up a screen which Screen Resolution is one of the choices, pick that. Once that opens choose Advanced Settings and when that opens you will see a screen with tabs and choose the Monitor tab. You will then see the screen refresh rate, if it has only one choice you can't do anything about it except tick of the hide modes the monitor can't display. If it has 59 Hertz and 60 Hertz chose the correct one for your monitor (check you manual) then hit Apply and OK and reboot your PC.

You said you are using an HDMI cable to connect your PC to the TV. I downloaded a .pdf of your manual and the 2 ways it states to connect to a PC is through the VGA from the PC to the VGA on the back of the TV which will provide plug and play functionality, the other method is to connect from the DVI output on the PC to the HDMI/DVI input on the TV and use the Input button on your remote, which method are you using?

It only had a few choices and they were all 60Hz.

I am currently using VGA to VGA because it works! I'm trying to get the HDMI to work using the input button yes.

If you use the DVI to HDMI converter then follow the instructions in your manual it should work just fine but you cannot keep the VGA to VGA connection since I think that will mess things up. Not all HDMI cables are built to standard and if this was one of those run of the mill relatively cheap no name HDMI cables one can find on the WWW it may be your problem and for the sake f a few $'s I'd opt to go with a name brand that meets, or exceeds, HDMI standards, I purchased on by Belkin and it works w/o issues, there are cables where a generic works just as well as a name brand but HDMI and eSATA are cables I'd rather spend my $'s on once by getting one that meets the standards.

I got a pretty expensive HDMI to DVI cable but to no avail. It's starting to get seriously annoying!!

I tried booting into low-res mode and found quite interesting results. It recognised the monitor as a digital one and allowed me to select all resolutions right up to 1080p. It would only let these run at a max refresh rate of 30Hz however. Another slight anomaly was that in this mode it would let me use every resolution apart from the native resolution of 1680x1050 which when selected showed 'no signal'.

Any more ideas would be fantastic.

If this is looking like a bit of a dead end, are there graphics cards out there that are very cheap but do a decent job and can output to HD easier than this Intel onboard rubbish? I don't really play games that much although I have just received a few for my birthday so would like to be able to play those at a decent frame rate. I am on a very limited budget however.

The ATi HD3870 was a good card in its day but I don't know anyone with your mobo who has tried one.

Are there any options in the intel control panel listing 720p or 1080i? nvidia/amd drivers offer basic (1680x1050/1920x1200..) and HDTV (720p/1080i..) display options and while some cannot get a TV to work under basic (1920x1200) it does work if they select hdtv 1080p.
Also there should be an option where you can set your own rez and timing settings in the intel control panel that could be worth a try
