Solved Getting rid of Aero Peek in Windows 7

No matter what box I untick I am unable to stop Aero Peak from rearing it's ugly head.Been on Google and followed tips from such as Geek and others but the offending item sticks like the proverbial to a blanket.

Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. Untick the box. But you say that this doesn't work? Have you rebooted after clearing the box?

And/or :

Start button> right click computer > Properties > Advanced System settings (on left) > Performance Settings > Visual Effects > uncheck aero peek

Yep,did that and the bugger still there.

I don`t think you can get rid of that little rectangle down there. But I just unchecked the box, and sure enuf aero peek no longer works.

Are you certain you have " Use aero peek to preview the desktop" unchecked ?



And I use it so I`m turning it back on. Get back on you little checkmark.

If you are wanting to get rid of the "Show Desktop" button on the taskbar like below, then you really can't remove it. There are some options out there that can hide it, but they do not work very well and have side effects.

Thanks to you all for trying to help but as the awkward little sod refuses to budge whatever I try I have decided to leave well alone and just ignore it.

So, you`re still saying, that no matter what you do, when you move your mouse arrow on top of the rectangle in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you are shown the desktop when you have a window open full screen ?

Is that exactly what`s happening, and it just won`t stop ?

And you`ve run sfc /scannow and it shows no integrity errors ?

You keep saying IT "refuses to budge" what exactly do you mean by it ?

I know aero peek can really be annoying, and if it bothers you that much, a simple reinstall of windows will fix the problem. Just something to consider.

I`m just baffled how you can uncheck it, but yet it still functions.

Gone through the whole list to stop Aero Peak working but will reiterate what I said before,the little bugger refuses to shift even after rebooting after removing it from various lists.It was suggested that I do a reinstall to get rid but I think that could be akin to using a sledgehammer to crack a nut so as I have said,will now leave it in place and ignore the little sod.

Could you clarify if you are wanting to remove the "Aero Peek" button, or that "Aero Peek" still works when you hover over the button?

I know you have abandoned trying to remove Aero Peek, so I hope you don't take offense at my post.

I've seen a few occasions where a setting change does not stick for a Standard account.
Temporarily changing a Standard account to an Admin account, making the setting change, and then changing the account back to Standard fixed the issue.

I don't know why this might happen...maybe some corruption in the Account profile or a permissions setting somewhere?
Creating a new account and testing if the setting change sticks is something else that could be tried.

I don't know if a Startup Repair or Repair Install might help with this issue.
Maybe you have other issues beyond this that you haven't seen yet???
I'm just guessing here...but knowing the cause/solution could help others searching for this issue.

Is it possible what we call Aero Peek you are calling something else Aero Peek? I'm just going to guess what you are trying to turn off is not Aero Peek. That would explain the reason why nothing is working. Aero Peek causes the selected Windows either via the Task Switch (Alt + TAB), or by hovering over the application's thumbnail in the task bar to show up in the foreground while hiding all other windows. That is all Aero Peek does. I can only assume what you want to turn off is something different, because all of these options you have done would have turned it off.

Maybe a screenshot of the item you want to disable would help us point you in the right direction.

Like Brink asked, you have to CLARIFY your problem. Do you want to TURN AERO PEEK off or do you want to REMOVE it.

This is a simple question which you have yet to answer.


You can not remove it, nor should you try.

Unchecking the box simply turns it off. IF IT IS NOT doing this then tell us EXACTLY that.

Brink has hit it on the nose.I may be a late octogenarian but I do know what and where Aero Peek is and how it operates.Thank you all for your help.
