Hi Everyone
I installed a 1 Tara Hard Drive a while back and it was very fast, then it got slower and slower
I De-frag, I clean disc and I registry clean, but still, when I go to open firefox, its very slow.
I know this is a huge subject, and hope we can keep it on point here.
I just did a Kersperski virus scan and got nothing wrong.
I use avast anti viral. and a anti key logger, but that all ran fast.

yes i looked for other thread on this first, but found little about this in a general way

Hi again jim davis,

I use Firefox Quantum exclusively with several about:config tweaks & Add-ons!
What is a "Tara Hard Drive?" Do you mean 1TB Hard Drive? I have 3 1TB SSDs triple boot Win7, Win10 & Linux Lite.
How full is your drive? If it has less than 15% free space you should notice programs opening slower.
Do you keep yours updated via auto update?
What Add-ons, if any have you installed?
How full is your drive?
You don't need or want to use cleaners, seldom use Defrag on Hard Drive, etc. If you Defrag use Windows Defrag if needed. You can set Windows Defrag to run if you wish or when it is needed.
What Firefox are you using, Quantum?
Are you using more than one Anti-Virus as you state "Avast & many others"? This in and of itself is problematic as they usually conflict with one another!
Have you tried opening Firefox in Safe Mode?
Have your cleared the Cache, History, etc. recently?
Do you have FF set to do that automatically?
Firefox - Start Firefox in "Safe Mode" - Windows 7 Help Forums
I use Avast free, Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware, Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit & CCleaner Professional.
If you have many Firefox Add-ons, that will slow its opening considerably, as they have to load & check for updates each & every time Firefox is opened.

I changed nothing, null and void to most all above, it ran fast with every thing I have now, I store on flash drives when i started to get to 900 GB free on HD
so this evolved on its own, which is why i was concerned

What do you mean store on flash drives? Store what?

Do you run Firefox from flash drive?

Writing to and reading from flash drives (for that matter, any external USB connected drives) are considerably slower than internal HDD and more so with internal SSDs.

900GB free, therefore on a 1TB drive you only have 100GB used.

USB 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0 provided you have a USB 3.0 Flash Drive or 3.0 HDD or SSD interface.

I have 3 1TB SSDs installed on my desktop, triple booting Win7, Win10 & Linux Lite.
4TB external HDD 3.0 for compressed backups.

No, I store/use zero programs off F-drives, they have music, old movies Etc.
How ever, I had many "add on's" in firefox that where disabled, they are now gone and start up is faster for sure.
I am now toying with the idea a lot of this started when I added "libre cad" and Libre Office, neither one is working, in short can't open PDF's, I may clear out both and reload from net and see if that's a faster sled ride cause there are still some slowness issues, mean while will wait for others to chime in here with their 2 bits and ideas.

Hello folks

As I have read posted here and there around the net, many many folks are having my same slowness issue's
the stated reason for this is COVID has driven many to a higher home user use and a hi user use on servers and they are reacting slower as a result.
which would make sense as the times of day I experience the slow down is in relation to "Rush Hour"
which is 11 am to 8 pm in my area

Hi jim davis,

Is your Internet connection Ethernet/wired or WiFi?
Dell OptiPlex 745 is a desktop so I assume you have Ethernet.
Somewhat confused with your drive info. How much free space is on you C Drive please?

Hi Snick

No I do not allow WY FRY in the house, only in the micro wave to warm things like gloves, plus it SLOWS UP computers.
as stated it is a 1 Tara (bite) which i believe I got on your suggestion, but what i am most clear on is that I almost freaked here at the forum when i learned HD's could store that much now, I keep it about 920 GB free. ha ha , I forget which, but my old converted from XP to W7 western HD was 14 or 16 years old

My 1TB Crucial SSD is about 55% full, Win7x64 Home Premium boots and runs fast.
I'm going to purchase a 2TB Crucial SSD when the price comes down a bit more.
I have Xfinity cable, 150 Mbps Down, 50 Mbps Up, & I do notice that during the day web pages, and other internet related applications are a bit slower.
I believe you are correct with the increased usage of the Net due to COVID.
I have WiFi connection for my laptop and SUHD TVs, and it is a bit slower than my wired connection.
Most everyone living around me has WiFi, 2.4 GHz slower speed to wider area
I have my WiFi on 5 GHz higher speed to smaller area.

Why do you keep so much space free and play with Flash Drives?
My opinion, this is not a recommended way to store data & may be some of your slow performance, especially if you have several connected at one time.
I use flash drives for recovery media, OS install media, etc and if I need to bring some data with me if I go somewhere. I don't store any original info on them for any long term storage.
Music, Video, Documents, Apps, etc on SSD, all open fast and run as they should.

.

Cause I can turn any computer into my computer in a instant.
I almost as stated never erase, so they, unless set on fire by a bad power supply (1 Time experience ) have never failed, I have a PNY 16 GB from 2007 that i use almost daily to print contracts. I sometimes think tho they take a bad rap from SSD salespersons.
plus they make nice holiday presents when i fill one with read only "public Domain Gary Cooper movies"

Thanks folks this thread solved
