Solved Give up on installing Win 7 Sp1 ?

file finding

Ok I have extracted all the file except for the winsxs\Manifests. I have winsxs on the disk(in Image 3) but no winsxs\Manifests. Can't seem to find them.

Never mind I found them. Wow for a senior citizen this sure is fun.

Looked under Manifests but still could not find them.

I tried to install the SP1 update on a fresh system about 6 times today . Failed every time .

i think there are inherent clashes with drivers. Ive actually managed to get the service pack to install on the one machine it was failing on but it breaks it completely - no shortcuts or programs work - this cant be right - there's got to be something seriously wrong for it to do that

i must be one of the lucky ones. I told it to install, and it did, first time. Maybe Balmer should work on windows, and give up the smartphone thing...

Can I just say how commendable it is for knowledgeable people as yourself to be guiding the rest of us through this process, however I think I'll back off this installation until things "just work" I bought my laptop to use for myself not to be an unpaid troubleshooter/quality control person for Microsoft. Anyone would think the service pack was still in Beta stage.
Shoddy work MS.

Hi, brotherboard.

Thank you for the compliment (I think :) ). I've been around help forums for many years. All software vendors have people with problems who need help. It has nothing to do with being "an unpaid troubleshooter/quality control person for Microsoft" or any other vendor. There just happens to be those of us who like to do what we can to help others. Years ago, I provided help with Ad-Aware. I know others who help with various vendor firewalls, SAS, MBAM, etc.

Stop and think about it -- even if each and every computer that was built was absolutely identical when it came off the assembly line (and we know they aren't since there are multiple manufacturers as well as people who build their own), realize that as soon as each of us puts our own personal mark on the computer, it is no longer unique. There is an infinite number of software configurations, customizations, hacks, etc. There is absolutely no way to test every possible scenario.

:D please don't think I was referring to you or any other advisor when I said about unpaid troubleshooters. (that bit referred to myself) You all do a fantastic job and I would never insult anyone in that manner.
I was reading the posts to ascertain if I would encounter any problems with this service pack. My laptop is working perfectly and the last thing I need is some software screwing it up. Having read the forum I see more problems than success, or is just that those who have not encountered problems don't post, so we get an a unbalanced view of things?

+1 Jacee.

Mine installed fine.
I've been helping out what I can.

My installation went without a hitch. It is as Jacee and Hopalong X replied. People who had success installing SP1 have no reason to come to the forums seeking help.

Some preparatory steps to take before any major upgrade, with several Windows 7 SP1 specific items noted:

  1. Clean out all temp files.
  2. Clear out all System Restore points but the last.
  3. Defrag your hard drive.
  4. Create a backup disk image to an external hard drive.
  5. Check the device manager and manufacturer's websites and verify that you have the newest available versions of your system's various device drivers installed. (Beware if you used Driver Cleaner programs.)
  6. Temporarily uninstall any/all security programs that have the capacity to block changes to the registry, unless they can be manually disabled and will remain disabled until manually restarted. If they automatically restart upon reboot, they must be temporarily uninstalled. (See http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ce-pack-1-faqs-helpful-links.html#post1266392 Re: McAfee)
  7. Check Windows Update to ensure all Important updates have been installed. (Note that KB 976902, is a Pre-requisite for SP1: Description of the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installation software feature update)
  8. If you installed any of the pre-release versions of SP1, uninstall them before installing the final release version of SP1.
  9. If you are using a laptop, be sure to be plugged in to an electrical outlet.

This looks like another case where old XPired tools like Driver Cleaner are being applied to an OS which doesn't need them.

Win7 is very good with drivers, can now be relied on in most cases to be the ultimate authority on the drivers it wants, smoothly installing them often without the need for so much as a restart.

Use the drivers given by the Win7 installer and quickly updated by optional Windows Updates after turning on hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware Only if there are performance issues would I change out the drivers given by Win7.

This is because MS spent a fortune getting drivers into it's installer and quickly available by optional Updates, even paying manufacturers under the WHQL program to build them so they wouldn't hold out (as with Vista) to force us to buy newer hardware.

As for the old Driver finders and cleaners, as with other tweaking programs they are now XPired and counterproductive for use with Win7. We learned this the hard way in beta and now have two year's experience to say with certaintly that Win7 only needs CCleaner, Auslogics defragger and maybe Revo Uninstaller as add-on tools - and many experts think it doesn't even need that.

This is truly the first totally lean, fully optimized and perfectly balanced OS.

Repair install!!!!

Did a repair install everything is A-OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SP1 installed and everything is up to date.11111:):D:cool::thumbsup:
