Goodbye FireFox, Hello Chrome

I am saddened to have to say this but after so many years of being a FireFox advocate the latest version 4 release has vaulted me to Google Chrome.

The version 4 interface and the number of crashes I have encountered make FF no longer a viable solution for me.

I find Chrome to be much, much faster and the development of plugins especially Firebug and download manager support have erased any objections I have had in the past that have prevented me from making the switch.

I recall having the same reaction to IE5 when FF first arrived on the scene but, alas it is no longer the case.

Goodbye old friend you served me well for many years.

i love chrome too - i actually use a chinese modified version, chromeplus - can't really recommend it right now, as the new build is a bit buggy...

anyway, can't you keep on using the old version of firefox?

I could but why bother. Chrome is so much faster and since the plugins I use frequently have been updated for Chrome I see no reason to use FF.

I absolutely love the new interface, and haven't crashed once. IMHO, if you're crashing...it's your hardware or some other piece of software conflicting.

I'm using FF Nightly x64 as my default and Chrome as my backup. Nightly is running like a dream at the moment, no crashes, no issues whatsoever.
That's not to say that Chrome isn't a fantastic browser. I like them both and speed wise I can't tell them apart.

it's a piece of software that runs under windows 7, as far as i know.

software (and hardware) often get discussed here - the forum isn't just about the OS per se - don't be fooled by the name of the forums

I do use an older version of FF 3.6 and it is stable and has a lot of plug-ins still. I also use Chrome for browsing, but haven't gotten any plugins. < Any you would recommend?

This is probably true especially of the newest version 4. The addons I use every day are firebug and Internet Download Manager. Given equality of addon support the speed difference becomes a major factor. Chrome is by far the fastest. It uses the Webkit engine and independent speed tests have apparently confirmed this engine as the speed leader.

I have 3.6.17 and 4.01 and neither give me troubles

I also have SR Iron (chromium) and find it a bit lacking in the creature comforts - I believe in this day and age a browser's capability to conform to a user's needs is indelibly progressive. I must admit Chrome speed dial is really poor in comparison to Opera's and FF Foxtab, and what is up with Chrome smooth scroll? You would think that if Chrome is going to become an OS/browser hybrid - it should be quite ahead of the curve.

I haven't had a FF crash in ages - 3.6 was an excellent build IMO.

I get Firefox crashes too Even in Firefox Safe Mode (ie no addons)

Adobe Flash was causing quite a few crashes for me towards the end of the day (explained below) and so I run without Adobe Flash now. I use Firefox 3.6.latest, under Vista.

My browsing habits are awful. I open up a Firefox window in the morning, look at all of the forums, which usually creates in the order of 150-200 tabs. For every single time I move topic (a Google search, another look at all or some of my forums) I create a new Window, and end up with between 20-100 tabs, with an average of about 50.

And I never close anything! By the end of the day on a weekend, I regularly have 40-70 windows open. Which is a LOT of tabs!

If I right click in the Task Bar > Close Group on Firefox, the world ends, and the whole computer just freezes for a good minute somtimes, and then it painstakingly recovers, and Firefox regularly crashes at this point.

And so to quit Firefox at the end of the day, I have to end the Process as standard. And then I restart Firefox, it tries to recover my tabs, crashes, I end the Process, next time it fails to reopen the tabs, and so I can start a new session.

But also, when I get above about 30 windows, it can crash just randomly (Firefox has stopped working and Firefox has crashed, please send a bug report)

But I love my Firefox, and all of my problems are self inflicted by bad habits!

The IDM addon is a huge cause of crashes btw, so your issue lies in IDM not with FF
