Last year Google launched a service that had lots of people excited to try it, called Google Wave. Users everywhere were very eager to get their hands on an invite to the service, since the service was invitation only at the time it launched.

This is from the Wave blog:

Just before the December holidays, a few Google Wave team members were playing foosball and decided we needed to do something fun together. Since Australia is a bit warm that time of year, we figured why not go to Antarctica?....

....If we hadn't used Google Wave, we might have been able to pull the trip together in time, but we're not sure we would have still liked eachother enough to actually enjoy our time trapped on a boat together.
Cost for five people was more than a combined $33,000. This was a spur-of-the-moment getaway, I don't know if it was at company expense. Regardless, I think it opens a window into the google world that some of the people there don't live in reality. They were working on an admitted, essentially useless tool. And I'm not saying they should have focused all those trip resources back into their work. I'm just saying that I think they knew Wave was a waste, and they picked the most obscure place on the planet to go on a trip. Sounds more like they were trying to escape Wave than anything else.

I really liked it and tried to use it in and popularize it in various ways for months but in the end I was "not waving but drowning" (alone):)

I never liked Google Wave.

I never liked it either. Saw no practical use for it. Could not understand why some were so excited about it but maybe I am just that oblivious. I like Google but sometimes I don't agree with them.
