REALLY! A phone number I did not recognize. Someone from India in a larger noisy call room. Claimed he worked for Windows and they had gotton info sent from my computer saying it was infected. He was going to help me remove it. He said he did not work for Microsoft. He had me open the Event Viewer, It showed Warnings and Errors. He decided it was really messed up. But he would help me and it would cost nothing. I told him I had no idea who he was, so I got a number and told him I would call back but never did. Was this some kind of scam????
I did get some kind of blue screen the other night and to do a restart.
Did I do the right thing not letting him "help" me????
Thanks Eileen

Also, be careful of people calling, saying they are affiliated with MS & will clean/optimize your computer for free or for a low price. The "free" service generally ends up costing you when they claim to find "problems that require more specialized attention."

My theory on these calls that are scams is simple--How would a person working for some "company" that calls you out of nowhere know your computer is infected? It's your computer. They're after data and possibly identities, unfortunately.

Thanks to all who responded. The whole thing sounded fishy. I have to tell you the reason I did not get sucked in is because of this forum..... I have learned a few things here and something clicked and told me to check here first....
Thing is was able to take anything or put anything on my hard drive? He was able to get to my laptop ID. He read it to me....
Thanks so much everyone!!!!!!

I used to receive those calls, but I knew right away it was a scam. My computer was clean, so there was no way it could be infected. Silly people with nothing better to do!

In all likelihood, the ID he read you is found on your laptop as well as millions of other laptops in the world. Some ID numbers in a PC are unique and some aren't. He knows that but most people don't, which is why people get sucked in to the scam. It's a way to fool you into having confidence in him.
