Hello there.

As I've reinstalled windows on my computer since my previous SSD broke earlier, I have failed to make the GPU work properly.

It's a Sapphire radeon HD 7970. I tried installing the drivers off the included disk initially, to no avail. It wouldn't work. I then tried getting them off AMD's website and the installer program says I've already got the latest drivers. However, it still won't appear in the device manager and I've found no sign at all that the computer even knows it exists.

The video output cable is connected via the graphics card, though, so I can't imagine it being broken, seeing as I do have the output displayed on my monitor.

Hutler try right clicking the unknown devices and video controller in device manager and click uninstall. Then reboot and try again. If you have another type cable for a different port on you card try that too.

What do?

I see a warning by the Video controller in the screen shot. Have you installed all the motherboard drivers since you reinstalled Windows?

Edit: Welcome to the forums by the way:)

Not too sure Doug, really need to establish if he installed all the motherboard drivers after the reinstall, as you know this is one of the first things you should do followed by Windows updates etc.

Yeah, cheers. Great to be here.

But, uhm, I do believe I have reinstalled all the necessary motherboard drivers. It's some ASrock one, btw, just in case that matters.

I'll go check if I ever installed the VGA driver and see if that helps. I thought that was for integrated graphics, which is what my computer should currently be running, since the GPU isn't being used. Not sure. BRB.

I'll get right about to posting the whole component list in just a moment, too.

Edit: Ok, so I installed the Onboard VGA driver off the ASrock disk and this is what shows up in the device manager now.

devicemanager2_zpsa1ead35a.png

It seems the warning sign by the graphics controller line was indeed pertaining to missing drivers for the integrated CPU graphics, because it went from showing that this intel graphics rubbish.

I hope noone will hunt me down and kill me, or what have you, for this, but I'm using an unauthentic copy of windows, so I'm not too keen on doing the windows update business. Last time I did it it gave me loads of rubbish about the authentication that was pretty difficult to get rid of.

Just as a disclaimer, I do have a windows 8 license that I could use but refrain from as I've only heard and experienced rather unappealing and undesirable changes and things about it, which is why I'm using Windows 7. Seems to me it's fair enough.

But I could of course go through the windows update process again. Do you think it might help?

Actually if you can find out the model of your Motherboard that would be helpful.

Funnily enough, I have an Asrock Extreme 4, and when I first got my 7970 I had the exact same problem as you, it would not find the GPU. I did a lot of looking around on the web, and found a fair few people with my board had the same problem and a bios reset cured it, my motherboard has a "clear CMOS" button on the back, I pressed that, it rebooted and found it straight away, I was very relieved. Obviously I had to manually re-enter my bios settings after but it worked fine from then on.

For what it's worth, it's all been running fine on my prior installation of windows 7, before my rubbish SSD broke. Experienced no difficulties last time around. Quite strange really.

Edited my prior post too, in case you didn't notice.

Ok, right. Looks Like I'm going need to use my windows 8 license instead after all, then. How unfortunate.

But shouldn't this be locked and deleted if it violates the rules? I'm sure an account on here will be useful once I transfer to 8, though, so I probably don't need a ban.

Heh. 5 posts in and my name's misspelt for the first time on this forum.

I agree windows 7 at least seems a lot more intuitive than 8, above all, but the thing is I do have an unnused license for it just lying about, so yeah. And thanks for the effort anyway, chaps.

When's win 9 coming out? Only every other installment of Windows is decent. Funny how tjey've held on to this strange tradition.

If you have a licence for 8, install it.

Then Install classic shell which gives you back the start button and menu and let's you bypass metro.

I'm on 8 and its like using a themed skin on seven. It's not a bad OS tbh.

It could be mate, but I haven't used Skype so I honestly couldn't say where it's at with 8 ATM.

I personally haven't encountered any problematic apps, but then again I haven't used them all.

If you jump over to the 8 forums they may have more up to date info than I do regarding Skype.
