Grand Theft Auto IV Compability

Hey everyone, i just bought GTA IV. Its working and it looks great.

So when i started the game, everything was fine. When i was playing the game, the game freezes randomly for a few milliseconds, which makes the game unplayable.

So i went to systemrequirementslab.com and ran an compability test. Minimum requirements passed everything. But in the Recommend requirements one thing doesnt pass: The CPU.

Recommended: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
You Have: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz

Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your CPU does not meet this requirement. Click here to see some recommendations.

Now i have the following questions:

1) Is it possible to play the game without upgrading the CPU? (like with tweaks)

2) If i overclock the CPU, what would be the cons?

I am counting on you guys, this forum helped me alot of times. So i am grateful for what you guys done for me.

It should work correctly with that specification, it's just being picky about what it wants, not what it needs (as far as I am aware).

The glitch/freeze you saw is not due to your hardware but due to your software (most likely anyway).

GTA4 is notorious for its compatibility issues.

Please ensure you have GTA4 running in compatibility mode with Windows XP (SP2) selected.

Please ensure that Windows is up to date and your game is also up to date.

Hopefully having all this done should fix your problem. (hopefully)

PS GTA4 is not a Windows 7 friendly program, I may add the last person I attempted to help just gave up and installed XP to run it , but he was rather impatient, I don't think you'll have to do that.

Thanks for replying, however. The problem still occurs. When i tried to set the compability to Windows XP SP2 i get an error when starting the game:

GTA IV FATAL ERROR: RMN40

So i tried Windows XP SP3, that worked. But still got the problem.

EDIT: Everything up to date.

Keep it with XP3 then.

You may want to try lowering some of the settings as well (if you haven't already done so).

You may also want to check your graphics drivers are up to date.

I setted to lowest settings, the problem is still occuring. All my drivers are up-to-date. Ive read on the forums of GTA that several people also had this problem with the same CPU. But i would try all tweaks out before i start overclocking.

If you don't mind me asking could you specify which file and add a link to where you found this info out?

It's always good to document how you fixed a problem to help those who have the same troubles as you.

As you are new to the forum I thought you might like to know how to mark threads as solved as well as the uses of some of the other buttons.

To the top right of this post you will see 3 icons. An orange (+), a set of scales and a red and white warning triangle.

The orange (+) or blue (-) denotes whether a user is on or offline (orange = on, blue = off).

The scales are used to give rep points; click this button if someone has helped you significantly or solved your queries (only give this to posts that you think really deserve it).

The red and white warning triangle is used to denote either an abusive post OR to mark a thread as solved (just put solved in the box that comes up and the admins or moderators will mark it solved).

Mark it solved when you post back.

You had to create an txt file in the Game Directory. Called commandline.txt

In the commandline.txt, you have to put this in:

-norestrictions -novblank -percentvidmem 80

And then save it. You cant download it anywhere, you have to create it. It fixed mine problem.
