Have a same issue I have seen in Vista, the famous GRoD.

Folders open fine but when I try to sort on date it takes forever (5-10 minutes). The folders contain a lot of files (1000 - 3000).

Any tricks I can use to prevent this?

I'm using a fresh install of 7 professional (official Micky Licensing version).

Never heard of the GRoD... but anyways your problem is probably so many files. Its probably not 5-10 minutes though, I think thats a bit of over exagerating. (if thats how you spell it)

As you say in your post you are using a new install,

first question is are the files in an indexed location and are they actually indexed yet. depending on how much total data you are indexing the type of data and your available idle time, indexing can take a while

If these files are of the type that are searched in depth and are for some reasons are not indexed, due to the quantity of files you would expect to see a delay

yes and also your CPU might not be able to handle sorting it all instantly so the delay happens =)...

try to lookat task manager while sorting it =)

yeah your cpu might be the bottleneck as its rather old now and lags behind the 1tb hard drive. Time to replace it!

1000 - 3000 files is way too much for a single folder without lag, could you not move some of the files into sub folders of there own?

Tx for the fast reply, I compare this with my previous Vista install, the data disk is the same. (for 1000 files, I never had problems till 40,000 files before)

ok, maybe 10 minutes is to long but it was more than 5 yesterday (just timing right now and I have 3 minutes 40 sec).
Once it has done a sort, I can fast switch to a previous one.

I also noticed that it displayed tumbnails very fast for the complete folder, but sorting is the problem, even with basic file lists view.

And yes I have upgrade my Processor from E6300 to E8400 yesterday before I did the tests.

the GRoD abbreviation does not exist (yet) but have a google on "Green Ribbon of Death" you seen what I mean (and it is easyer than writing the complete name). I have noticed it a few times when you had a corrupt file in the folder. But as it works fast onder Vista, it most be something else (I just tested this with my old Vista boot).

One last question, how do I see when the indexing has finished? I have added those folders two days ago and my PC is still on (after several reboots).
