I've just gotten Grid 2 and have spent the last few hours playing with it.

It's awesome. If you like racing games, you should check this out for sure. It's the prettiest racer I've ever played, the controls are tight and responsive, and it's more arcade racer than sim. It's easy to play and get into.

The A.I. is very interesting too. There are about 80 different 'qualities' and each CPU controlled racer in the game gets a random set of 3 of them. So, some racers will come after you for revenge if you hit them, others will try to avoid contact, another might refuse to allow passing, where as another might let you pass. It creates a very dynamic race where no two racers behave the same way. It's really cool so far and the behaviors can vary wildly and you never know exactly what kind of racer's you'll be up against in a given race.

Another neat feature are the 'Live Routes' in which the tracks actually dynamically change as you race them. That forces you to pay attention and keeps you on your toes. There are also overtake events, in which you have to drive past a line of slow moving trucks without crashing gaining score for each one passed without incident. Hitting something knocks your score down as does not passing something in a set amount of time. The rest of the races are the standard group of track rules that have shown up in various racing titles like elimination, drift events, face off, Togue, and your standard, but not any less well done 'finish first' standard race.

I could do without the annoying guy talking to me on the menu screens. I think it's the same guy from Burnout Paradise, but he's not trying quite as hard to be a hipster douchebag because he's not pretending to be a fake radio announcer this time. It does bear some similarities to Burnout Paradise, as well as Need for Speed. It's not open world, the cars are destructible but more realistically so and a bit tougher than Burnout or NFS's vehicles.

The tracks seem very alive. Squirrels dart across the road, geese fly through the air, and tons of people line the sides of the raceways. Seriously, there's a lot and they are well animated. The human models are actually kind of low res and muddy, but you won't notice it during a race because they go by so fast. It can be a little jarring in the pre-race scenes where the camera pans about a little around the starting point.

Oh, and up to twelve cars on the tracks at once. That's quite something to see, especially when they are all controlled by human players. For those who don't know, that's very impressive for this sort of game.

Anyway, high speed fun, destructible cars [either realistic or cosmetic damage], and an awesome rewind feature that makes giving into the urge to do something stupid just to see what happens all the more easy to give into.

Check my screenshots. These are all at Ultra settings BTW:

This game is seriously sweet so far. The original Grid was a game changing racer that had a huge influence on the genre. It appears that Grid 2 is no different. Amazing game and well worth the wait. I highly recommend that you pick this up.

Great review! The screenshots are a nice touch, which is an idea that I might steel from you if I ever do a game another game review.

I don't think I am going to get this one though. I got Grid 1 and wasn't a really big fan. I am more of a true simulation type and prefer Gran Trurismo or Forza.

I can't get into a Racing game on the computer but those screenshots look awesome... enough to entice me to try something new ;)

One question though, do you drive with the camera behind the car only or does it give you the option of first person view as well?

It's released tomorrow in the UK, the game will unlock in around 2.5hrs, I have it pre-loaded but I will wait until the morning to try it for the first time.

Thanks for the review, I am glad to hear it's a good game.

@AstaLaVista, A decent game controller is a must for PC racing, I use an Xbox controller for Windows.
And I always use "bumper" cam when racing, I think it gives a more realistic feel to the games.

I take it "Bumper Cam" translate into normal/everyday drive view? ie:... real life view

Actually I am getting my views mixed up , I use the bonnet cam view where you can see most of the bonnet.
Bumper cam is where you don't see any of the car, just the road.

One question though, do you drive with the camera behind the car only or does it give you the option of first person view as well?

Yeah, there is no cockpit view, but as mentioned there is a bumper cam where you can't see the car and another cam that's similar to a cockpit view where you can see the front end of the car on the lower part of the screen.

The original Grid did have a cockpit view where you could see the interior of the car, but the devs axed it because it freed up more resources for processing everything else and nobody really used it. [They've said something like only 5% of players used it.] It apparently took quite a bit of processing power to render the entire interior and the rest of the game looks a bit better because they cut it out.

I kind of wish they'd left it in as that's the best way to play a racing game using Oculus Rift. It's not too bad though as the front end cam is close enough to work well.

The front end view is best for using a wheel, but the 3rd person view seems to work best for a controller. I only occasionally play with a controller, pretty much only when I'm really in the mood for a racing game, but too lazy to set up my wheel. I've got a Logitech G27 so I usually either set it up or play something that's not a driving game. I've also got a Dev kit version of the Oculus Rift, and there's no point to playing with that if you're just going to use a controller.

Yeah, I like my toys. I've got my PC where I want it, so I've invested in peripherals.

The Rift is awesome, but it's a dev kit version. It's not HD resolution, and it's kind of a pain to program it right now. It's not too hard, but a bit time consuming. The GUI isn't extremely user friendly right now, but it's not too bad. It's not for casual gamers yet, you've got to know what you're doing. I haven't actually tried Grid 2 with it yet, as I have to make a profile for it. Though, the fact that it's got native 3d does make that easier to do.

+ 3 ... does that make 8% instead of just a lowly 5% ;) :D

Part of the reason I liked Gran Turismo was because I could use cockpit view, third person is just weird for me (i know, old dog syndrome :o) and the cars move all over the place while I am trying to correct... Once I heard that GT4 or 5 was coming to the PS3 only, that was when I stopped as I was not going to buy a console just so I could play 1 game... my kids wanted it but they opted for the Xbox 360 instead and that's all she wrote.

That is an awesome add-on but they way I have my setup, I wouldn't be able to take advantage of it... perhaps when the kids move out and I can make one room into my "Mancave/gaming Room"... perhaps also by then, they will make it more user friendly as well... win win!

Honestly you should look into getting Forza 4. It is pretty much Xboxs Gran Turismo. I actually like it better in some cases because there is a lot more customization and is still a true simulation game.

Forza 4 is the most current game that came out about 2 years ago. I believe that Forza 5 is due to launch with the Xbox One. There is Forza Horizon which is their first open world racing game that came out last October. I haven't played it but it got great reviews. But if you are looking for good simulation game Forza 4 still holds its weight and doesn't feel outdated like most racing games do after a few years.

Hi Guys,

So I played Grid 2 for a bit, but I am getting annoyed for one simple reason.

In Grid 1, I used to love setting fast laptimes on all the tracks and then seeing how I was doing on the world leaderboards, I got in the top 10 on many tracks, it was great fun.

Fast forward to Grid 2, I am searching and searching but I cannot seem to find any leaderboards in the game for all the tracks. Am I missing something or have they got rid of them?
The only leaderboards I can find are the weekly challenge ones. Which are for specific weekly events.

Please tell me I am missing something and there are normal leaderboards for all tracks?

Paul.

I haven't played much in career mode yet, but I don't find the difficulty 'Very hard' challanging at all :( . Compared to GRID 1, instead of using the handbrake you have to drift by oversteering (that is extremely annoying for me and ruins drift). The cars are pretty easy to drive, but are a bit funkey, IMO the car movement calculations are a bit overcomplicated. The GFX are great, but the CA on the HUD drives me mad. The multiplayer is good, but you can't mute your mic in-game. So, to sum up, the perfect game for me would involve the controls and movements of GRID 1 and the tracks, GFX of GRID 2.

I might change my mind once I plug my Fanatec Wheel in, but so far this games looks like a pretty simcade controller racer.

It should have been called Drifty-Drifty 2

It's no sim, but it's certainly fun for what it is.
