Group Policy? What on earth is it and why do admins limit us!?

It is what it says: that allows an admin to set the general rules for a group of users as defined by the policies of the company. For the specifics you have to ask your admin because they are different from company to company.

I think the fact is that maybe your dad has restricted you so you dont' wreck the computer. LOL I did that with my older brother and my dad when they used mine. As they were always playing around with settings in the control panel and breaking a few features in Windows (which required how many times worth of XP repairs at the time).
Bottom line is dont' fret. What group policies did he enable? I would be curious. I took away my bro's ability to be able to change settings in Internet Explorer, Control Panel but nothing like the start menu or desktop restrictions. Don't see the point in restricting their ability to change those sorts of settings. I'm thinking your dad set it up so that you don't mess around with the big settings.

Group Policy is an invaluable tool to us sys admins, on a domain it allows us to allow or block all kinds of things, from Windows Updates across a network to not allowing users to put a cheezy wall paper on their desktop (despite what people think, in professional buildings visitors, guests and vendors don't want to see you vacation pics on your computer)
As said, it can be used at home for the "dad" factor as well...
In my world, it allows security/system changes without putting my hands on each and every machine...BRILLIANT!!
