just thought i would pass this along.
after purchasing a pair of GTX460-OC cards ( and spending a butte load of cash ), there can be a conflict with bios on mobo. the video cards come with HD sound of thier own which the mobo see's as a sound card disabling its onboard audio. as it seems, my mobo can only "enable" or "disable" its onboard sound lacking an option of "enable" or "yes" or something to that effect leaving me with ........."no audio device" installed. firmware updates speak nothing of this fix so why bother. further more, there is no more room for expansion of an additional sound card on the mobo because the sli takes up the entire bays!

option 1.
buy a new mobo w/bios options

option 2.
buy new video cards maybe cheap ones

option 3.
use a single card and add sound card

have i missed any other possible fixes? why do video cards have hd sound when the onboard is great? perhaps the mobo manual may show a jumper that can disable the onboard sound out of the bios?

boned, benched, and bummed. reminds of back in the day with dos and sierra titles. thought we came farther than that.

x58a-ud3r mobo
gtx460-oc in sli
no sound

this system runs very cool, which might explain why the CPU has not given up yet......
Hello Delamite,

Double check that you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers at the links below for you motherboard and graphics card.

Realtek HD Audio driver version 2.56:
http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/3756-latest-realtek-hd-audio-driver-version.html

NVIDIA 266.35 beta or 263.09 WHQL:
http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/602-latest-nvidia-forceware-video-drivers-windows-7-a.html

Afterwards:
  • If you have a DVI (graphic card) to DVI (monitor) connection, then make sure that you have the separate audio jack cable connected to the monitor's "Line-in" and to the motherboards's audio "Line out" plug.
  • If you have a DVI (graphic card) to HDMI (monitor) OR HDMI (graphic card) to HDMI (monitor) connection, then your system will use the HD audio instead throught these cables and will not need a separat audio jack cable.
  • If you have any other type of connect, just let us know.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Shawn,

The DVI output of the video card only carries the video components, although they are the same as those for HDMI.

Hi Dwarf,

I don't know what to say, but my old 28" monitor was connected using a DVI (graphics card) to HDMI (monitor) connection without any other audio cable connected, and it played all audio through the monitor's speakers using HD audio the same as if it was a HDMI (graphics card) to HDMI (monitor/HDTV) connection.

The DVI to HDMI cable must have been able to send audio as well.

Hi Shawn,

I've just noticed this:

Wikipedia said:
Some ATI and NVIDIA video cards with DVI outputs offer HDMI audio output, though this is done using the DVI connector pins in a non-standard way, using a special custom DVI to HDMI adapter to route the audio out to the HDMI on the correct pins.

Ah, I was thinking it had to be something like that. This was with a EVGA GeForce GTX 480 Fermi SuperClocked.
