Hello everyone! this is a problem that has been bugging me for a few months and I finally want to get it fixed.

I've noticed a lot of people have this problem, so I'll make this brief.

Whenever I try to start up half life, a mod for half life or counter-strike 1.6 or CZ, I always get an error saying:

The game has detected that the previous attempt to start in opengl video mode failed.
The game will now run in software mode.

The problem is, I click ok on the message and then, nothing happens!

The graphics card I'm using is an AMD Radeon HD 6800.

If anyone knows how I can fix fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forums... not knowing your full system specs does not help us help you.

Being said that, when was the last time you updated your Audio & Video drivers correctly? this could easily be a corruption on your drivers when you install one of the games and by uninstalling, cleaning remnants of those drivers and installing updated drivers, you may cure the issue.

Then again you may not but at least it is one thing you could test.

I'm sorry I couldn't locate my exact system specs, I'll try to find them and update my profile with them...

I last updated the drivers about 2 months ago (when the problem started)

I'll try what you suggested as I haven't tried it yet and I'll get back to you
