Hard disk is failing? Error message"File record segment is unreadable"

Yesterday when I switch on my computer, it automatic diskcheck on my E disk. I have 3 HDD, which is C: (My main partition, installed Windows on this HDD), D: is for all my game files (Installed games) and E: is for all my music, movies, game installer, software etc.

So back to the point, when I switch on my computer, and get to the "Windows is Starting", and it stuck right there for about 5-10 minutes. Firstly, I have no patient so I restated the computer, and second or third time also have the same problem. So I choose to wait patiently, after 5-10 minutes, it have a black screen for about 1 to a few minutes, then it started the disk check on my E drive.

Once the process started ( I have total 234240 file record as shown on the disk check ) and continue to file record 800, it started to give me message stated "File record segment 800 is unreadable, File record segment 801 is unreadable" and so on, and sometimes it continue to go smoothly without the message, but not long or sooner it will appear again. Almost the whole process I get these message which worried me, and I wonder if my hard disk is failing badly and unable to recover.
It continues to finish the process and attempt to fix the bad sector. And after that it successfully log onto Windows, so I can use it normally again.

But I notice my E: HDD cannot access and the "My Computer" screen is loading very slow, and sometimes goes unrespond. One thing very weird is that after I few hours I log on to Windows, it pop up a message saying "Do you want to scan and fix Removable Drive". Then I choose to scan and fix it, and it goes the same process which scanning the file record and everything, and it fixes some bad sector.

I done two things with the statement I said on top (Red colour word), first, I did not run the scanning and fixing and continue to use my Windows, the second attempt was I do the scanning and fixing.



When everything is done, I can see that "My Computer" runs is a little bit faster when I double click on "My Computer", but it doesn't remains long. After I few test or trying to access to the E: HDD, everything back to the same problem again. I cannot access the HDD again....




So what should I do about it?
I haven't restarted my PC for now when I posted this post, because I still want to use my computer, so I'm waiting for reply. I hope you guys can help me out.

The "File record segment xxx is unreadable" error is an indication of failing hard drive. You should backup the data from this drive before it's too late.

Next, run some diagnostic testing on the failing hard drive; most HDD manufacturers have the diagnostic software available from their website. Software from Seagate will work with most brand.

If this drive would be mine, I'd just get a new one, the drive certainly will not get better...

What happens if you disconnect the 160GB Seagate (E: ) drive?
Have you run a chkdsk /r on the C: drive yet?

Best to download, burn to CD, and run the hard drive diagnostic from Seagate on that E drive.

If I run some diagnostic testing, will it help to fix or it just in time will fail already and cannot be use anymore?
I'll try to check if I can get the tools.

I already run the chkdsk /r on the E:, but not the CL, should the C: be also chkdsk /r?
The E: drive is 1.5 TB drive, and I didn't take any action to disconnect or whatever because I didn't get any instruction.

I already check using the tools for each HDD and all HDD of mine pass the SMART test. So any other test that I should do?

There is no danger to the drive or the computer in doing this. Just unplug the power and data cables from the drive (with the PC off) and restart.

Haven't tried the Partition Wizard surface test, but tried the SeaTools and Western Digital Tools. My E: drive that I uses the Western Digital Tools to scan and check and I failed the diagnostic test, so no way to repair it already? (Too many bad sector)

Anyway, I'll try to disconnect it soon, now I'm doing test for all the HDD, passes smart test but fail some diagnostic test.

This is a very simple and decisive test (and usually quick ):

• If you disconnect the drive and Windows immediately responds and performs normally then you know there is a problem with that drive.
• If you disconnect and the problems persists, then we can stop talking about the hard drive, because it is not the problem.

Well, I tested, when I disconnect the drive my Windows instantly work fine with good performance, so I think is not the Windows that causing problem already. Now I will try to backup all the file that I can, now the drive is working slowly, so now I'm doing my best to backup while the drive still work, and I just brought a new 2TB drive, from Western Digital.

Hey, I manage to get almost like all the data from the drive, just some data is corrupted, so never mind, at least others are in good condition.
So if I format the HDD or I format the Windows, does it make any diffference?

What do you mean "format Windows"? I don't think you want to do that. That will erase the operating system and most likely all of your installed programs. Leave the C: drive / partition / hard drive alone.

You can format the old E: drive once you have retrieved your data. Sometimes this will correct errors and revive the drive, but you do not want to trust it to non-backed up or crucial data.

Yes I know that I will loss the data on C:, but I heard that the guy told me that they need to format my Windows then only know what is happening to the HDD, is it untrue? The HDD doesn't need to format also will know if the E: drive is functioning well right?

Now I'm copying all the files to E: but still not done yet. I hope I can manage to copy all before the HDD fail.

Ubuntu boot? How do I do that? But I think I don't need to do so because I still can copy my data without problem, but some data is corrupted and I don't mind because I don't need it, other important file still able to copy.

A Ubuntu boot Mual is booting from a Ubuntu OS disk then you access the C: or E: or whatever drive from the Ubuntu OS while it is running. Windows will not be running at all!

You need to make a Ubuntu boot disk first.

Create a USB stick on Ubuntu | Ubuntu then set your BIOS to boot from the USB.
