Hard Drive Always Corrupted

Anyway, MaxBlast repaired a dead Maxtor HDD when everything else failed. So I use it exclusively for repairing bad sectors now. It never fails. However, you might have to have at least one SeaGate, or Maxtor drive installed to be able to use it, I can't remember. My service PC always has at least one SeaGate in it, so I'm not sure.

That's good to know and I have both Maxtor and Seagate disks. Will have to read their PDF - tomorrow.

I swear by both [SeaGate bought out Maxtor anyway]. And I won't purchase anything but SeaGate. Only one hard drive failure in around 15 years, and that was my own fault, not the HDD.

If you visit any sites that actually do data recovery on bad drives, that's where you get the real skinny on the best drives to purchase. Stay away from the new generation of Hitachi's. They are using porcelin on the platters now, and the dust from it sticks to the heads. Their junk. I've heard that the 11th generation SeaGate Barracuda's have firmware issues with their SATA drives, so that's the only SeaGate to steer clear of. I have an 11th generation IDE ATA Barracuda, and it's been working great for a few years.

Ermmm... I DID use WUBI once, and that did some bad things, like fake partitions and such, but I thought those should have been gotten rid of by now. Checking the /Videos folder specifically now.

Have you tried using a different cable on your hard drive yet? I'm almost positive this is a hard drive issue. That's the most common problem when files appear to be corrupted, is a bad cable. Happens all the time.

Not really sure what to make of it, except that Windows doesn't think \Videos is an OK folder?

Yeah... that can happen if the folder is a hardlink... I've got to update that utility for win7... but if you can find your actual Videos folder it should scan it.... It might also help to turn on the "Show hidden files" and turn off the "Hide system files" options in your folder view settings....

What I was trying to do was to get you into a position where you could identify bad files and dump them or at least get a backup...

But there are still other paths to explore... have you tried the Error Checking tool from right clicking the drive then selecting properties->tools ?

Also from the hardware side....
Have you checked your drive cables? It could well be a bad connection...

Have you tried simply copying your files out to another disk and doing a complete format and reinstall on this one? If you did have a bad connection the corruption might be to the point where that's your only fix.

Maybe the others will have some ideas....

It's an internal HD on a laptop.

That still doesn't eliminate bad connections...
Try to simply remove it and plug it back in and see what you get....

And now the tough question....
Has that computer ever been dropped?

That's another thing I was thinking. I've had corrupted installs due to a bad HDD connection more than once.

Bad sectors will do the same type of thing. Sometimes a fresh install won't bypass those bad sectors that were previously "repaired" by Windows. The newer drives actually store that info in the firmware now. HDD's have come a long way.

Code:

worked.

What is the /r tag, and what did it do that /f didn't?

Thanks!

Me mentioning that it's an internal HD on a laptop was just me saying that messing with the cables isn't something I'm excited to do.

Has the laptop ever been dropped? Depends who is asking.
I'd tell the company that no, it hasn't.
But it most likely has.

The /r switch locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Glad to see you got it resolved!

Actually, I didn't. My excitement was due to the fact that if I click "Videos" from the "Libraries" shortcut, then it opens the folder. But when I navigate to the folder directly, I get an error message.

How are you attempting to access the Video's folder? Is it a link in the start menu, or do you have to go into Documents>Video's? I think we're getting somewhere now.

I open an explorer window. On the left side, it has shortcuts to things, under the headings "Favorites", "Libraries", "Homegroup", "Computer", "Network."

If I expand the "Libraries" tab, then click on "Videos", it takes me to my videos folder, showing the "Sample Videos" subfolder. No error so far. When I right-click and try to create a New Folder, I get this message.

An unexpected error is keeping you from creating the folder. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
with the options Try Again and Cancel.

When I open an Explorer window and navigate to c:\users\bill and click on the "Videos" folder, an error message pops up:

C:\Users\Bill\Videos is not accessible

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

Ok... try this and tell me what happens...

click Start and on the Start panel click your user name... That will open your home folder.... What happens if you click "videos" in there?

Also a little shortcut trick ... On the start panel, drag your username out onto the desktop... Instant access to your home folder.

Hmmm, that's odd. Try this once. Right click on the taskbar> choose Properties> click on Start Menu tab> Customize button> scroll all the way down to the bottom, and tick the show as link circle, then save. Now try to access the video folder through the start menu. If that works, check to see if it unlocked your video's folder through explorer.
