Hard Drive - Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle or Never

How to Turn Off Hard Disk After so many Minutes of being Idle or Never

   Information
This will show you how to have your hard disks to be either turned off after however many minutes you set of being idle, or to never be turned off in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

This setting will only affect internal HDDs and not for SSDs (solid state drives).

When set to turn off hard disks after idle, you will notice a brief delay of a few seconds when you try to access a turned off hard disk as it spins back up and is turned back on automatically as needed. Having your hard disks to be turned off after being idle can help save energy and extend a laptop's battery life.

   Note
Hard disks do not turn off after your computer has been idle

If you have the hard disks set to be turned off after X amount of minutes of being inactive, then this behavior can be caused if any disk activity occurs, whether it is caused by user input or system tasks. Disk activity of any type resets the hard disk idle timer, and this can increase the amount of time it takes for your hard disk to turn off.

Windows is designed to automatically perform maintenance tasks to improve performance and reliability. When your computer is on AC power and is idle, system maintenance tasks may be able to run for a few minutes. These system maintenance tasks include disk-layout optimization to improve performance and preparing automatic system restoration points to increase reliability. Typically, these tasks occur the first time you leave your computer idle after you start it. These tasks ensure that the system maintains its performance and reliability even after long use. Because these tasks involve reading and writing to the hard disk, the hard disk idle time is reset regularly during this maintenance period.

There are other items that can reset the hard disk idle timer. These items can include:
  • Paging operations.
  • Windows Update checking the system state.
  • Event logging.
  • Network detection such as DHCP or Autonet.
  • Third-party services such as quota software or an antivirus program.
  • Scheduled tasks.
  • The loading of services or drivers.
When these items either read from or write to the hard disk, the hard disk idle timer is reset.

Here's How:
1. Open the advanced power settings in Windows 7 or Windows 8 for your selected power plan, and do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshot below)
Advanced.jpg
2. To Turn Off Hard Disks After Idle
A) Expand Hard disk and Turn off hard disk after, set how many minutes you want the hard disks to be idle for before being turned off, click/tap on OK, and go to step 4. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: The default setting is with 20 minutes.
Power_Options.jpg
3. To Never Turn Off Hard Disks
A) Expand Hard disk and Turn off hard disk after, set it to Never ( 0 minutes), click/tap on OK, and go to step 4. (see screenshot below)
Never.jpg
4. Close the Edit Plan Settings window. (see screenshot below step 1)
That's it,
Shawn

this is a nice thought actually..to turn off the hard disk!
one question though, i download stuff so my laptop is on for like hours, so would this thing work while i am downloading and doing nothing else?
i mean the download manager would be writing files onto the hard disk all the time, causing it to be "used" right?

Hello Gaurav Prakash,

The HDD will not turn off while the download manager is still writing to the HDD, but it will when the download manager is finished and the HDD is then idle for the amount of minutes you set. It could be helpful to save energy if the computer is still running when you're not around when it's finished downloading.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

SSD systemdisk for waking up Hard Disk with TeamViewer

Hello,

In "Hard Drive - Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle or Never" you write:

"This will show you how to have your hard disks to be either turned off after however many minutes you set of being idle, or to never be turned off in Windows 7 and Vista. This setting will only affect internal HDDs and not for SSDs (solid state drives."

This might be the good news That I was looking for.

I installed an SSD-disk with Win7 in my old 32bit pc in order to experiment with remote acces with TeamViewer. This is a nice program, but the pc has to kept 'on' in order to access it over the internet. As I do not want the two other harddisks (RAID1) to be running all the time while I am not at home, I wondered if the SSD-systemdisk could be kept active and alert without much energy consumption and that it would awake the other (data)disks when I would access the pc from soemewhere else. That way I can stop the rotating disks and keep the system disk on. Is that right?

Hello Rvanwaning, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, that would be correct. You could set Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle or Never option for how many minutes you want for the HDDs like you wanted. It has no affect on SSDs. :)

@Brink, thank you. After some testing it seems to work that way. In the energy saving settings the disks can be made to stop rotating after 20 minutes or so, but the pc should stay awake and NOT go to sleep after a while. This setting should be 'Never'.

This way the system-SSD reacts at any time to remote access from the internet, for instance with TeamViewer while the harddisks are sound asleep. Great!

Is there a way to selectively turn off one HD and not let windows turn it on by itself? Like an first stage backup that's in the PC but doesn't stay on or goes on and off all the time?

Thank you.

Hello too,

Not that I'm aware of, but you could disconnect the drive when not needed. The going on and off is the main reason why I just turned off this feature, or set it to have a longer idle time.

Windows 10 Powers off SSD instead of going to sleep

I know this is an old thread, but I hope someone that has posted previously or one of the moderators will see this and can help:

About a 1-1/2 months ago my 1GB HDD failed, along with my motherboard (due to chassis mount screws that had not been tightened at all during a warranty repair ). I decided to go with a SSD and upgraded RAM from 4GB to 8GB using (2) Crucial Ballistix 4GB sticks, and upgraded from the onboard graphics to an MSI Radeon R7 240 2gb graphics card. Reinstalled Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 10. I have been blown away with the startup/restart speeds and pretty much everything else: even programs like Excel and Powerpoint open in a blink of an eye, and the machine just couldn't run much better, except...

About a month in, the HDD has been turning off instead of going to sleep as it was set up to do. I've gone through all the power option menus, and have also gone to "Power Options >>> Advanced Settings" to make sure that the "turn off hard disk after ___ minutes" setting is set to "never" (0 minutes). (See Attached Screenshot) The computer still shuts down completely (and reliably :o) after 30 minutes every time it's left idle. Aside from a log-on screen that doesn't display properly when the computer restarts (or wakes), this thing runs great!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance - Paul

Hello Paul, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

Does Windows 7 see the SSD as a SSD in Device Manager?

The "turn off hard disk after" setting only applies to a HDD, and is not suppose to affect a SSD.

Brink:

First off, thank you for your prompt reply! I thought I'd get an email notification when someone posted a response, but I didn't? Please help me find that option. I have it enabled for other forums I'm a member of but can't seem to find that setting on this forum...

Yes, my Windows 10 device manager sees the SSD as a SSD. Is there any reason I can't get it to never turn off? It wasn't doing so until about a month after I'd installed it and reinstalled the OS.

Thoughts?

Thanks - Paul

PS: I'll keep checking back here until I can figure out how to turn on email notifications...

Paul,

I show that you are set to receive instant email notifications to threads that you are subscribed to. By default, you get subscribed to a thread/tutorial you post in. Double check to see if you are still subscribed to this tutorial.

Just to clarify, what is the SSD doing to make you believe it was turned off?

Are you sure that you're not waiting on any other connected HDD to turn back on (spin up) instead?
