I have one hard drive at the moment 1tb, I have 2 partitions C:windows (of course) Drogram files, Im planning on adding another duplicate HD just for Program files, I know i can clone a HD but can I clone just D partition to new HD, Then change D partition to G then change new HD to the D drive without messing up all the installed programs, I then plan to use G to store just pictures, music, movies, Work files only and the New D drive to stay progams, games etc.

Since your program folders are on the second partition your best use of the new drive would be for storage. While you can boot live with a GParted live cd in order to copy the entire partition from one drive to the next the present location is a main factor as far as the system registry is concerned.

One of the main problems of seeing programs installed to secondary partitions/drives is once something is changed they no longer work! Besides registry values new shortcuts to the new location are needed for those programs which will still run from the folders themselves.

Why are you making things so complicated. It would be a lot easier just to move your user files to the new drive. Just make sure you have defined folders on the new drive before you move things (in Properties > Location tab).

And? The one thing you are not looking at there is the new registry entries created by each program's installer.

Copying a partition itself is basic with a number of programs available. Getting the programs to work afterwards even when changing drive letters is another. You'll likely need to reinstall at least some of the programs to have those working again due to how each program was initially set up.

My thinking was when i changed new HD to be called D all the programs that have shortcuts and registry entries would still work because they were installed on D to begin with, and I have a 1tb for storage, Im not purely installing it for more storage. I like to have multiple things running that are on both partitions atm, Thought i would get a little faster performance when i have certain programs split on different Hd's

Simply changing the copied partition to D wouldn't solve any registry problem since you are also changing things physically to a separate hard drive. This is where things will get tricky there in order to have everything working over performing a fresh install of each with brand new reg entries and shortcuts.

As for oerformance that's always a mixed debate there with many custom installing programs to secondary partitions and drives in order to free up the OS primary. If you start filling the second partition now D on the host drive too fast you may wish later that the second new drive had been used for storage while leaving the first unchanges.

Presently I have two 1tb drives set aside for storage and would like to grab a 2tb for backing those up at some point. You would surprized how fast a drive will fill if you are regularly adding new files to any partition or drive!

Thanks for your help, Yea i know how fast. I have 1 tb external already 75% full and another 500gb 100% used. I guess ill just throw in new HD and start installing on it and not worry about coping things over.

When testing began on the 7 beta builds here I soon found myself pulling a drive out of the external usb housing it came in to allow for more space. That was on top of one 1tb drive later to see a second one added in for storage. The 1tb model now in replaced the first 500gb pulled out of the usb enclosure!

When buying the second 1tb WD Green Power to add to the first that was also simply pulled out of the external case and installed internally. The lower end drives by each manufacturer seem to be the series used for external drives there. Once Raptors grow in size or SSDs come down in price..... who knows!

USB3 will be another good answer. The first drives and mobos with USB3 are already out.

I just saw one review a few days back on a WD external drive with the USB 3.0 interface. The blog writer reported that it was 4.7 times faster then the equivalent 2.0 version! Ponder on just that and wonder how fast other devices will see transfer rates! eureka!

Yeah, I saw that too. I wondered about the "4.7 times faster" though. USB3 was supposed to be at the speed of eSata which should make it even faster than 4.7 times.

eSata isn't really any faster then your regular internal sata simply due to being extended outside of the case. You still use the same bus but plug into an external port extended from the board there. Some cases come with eSata ports while you can also add an adapter that fits into a PCI slot opeining.

While the present external usb drives tent to see slower access times over those installed internally the new 3.0 bus would seem to change a few things there. That will be especially helpful with something like the XP Mode that sees integrated components with usb support present.

Once prices start falling on SSDs watch out however! Those will be a stiff competitor to the ATA form presently common in use whether internal or external.

Right, but USB3 was supposed to be at the same speed as eSata - 3Gb/sec. But 4.7 times faster than USB2 (480Mb/sec) is a far cry from 3Gb/sec.

The new usb standard will do precisely that boost the overall performance and access times for external drives when using the new usb bus. Presently many prefer eSata and even Firewire over the 2.0 bus simply for the gains seen with those.

7 by default already sees support for 3.0 included. That won't be helpful for those running Intel chipsets however not until at least 2011. NVIDIA confirms Intel chipsets won't support USB 3.0 until 2011 -- Engadget

This is where the SP1 for 7 will need to offer some help along with updates from Intel for their own chipsets.
