Please help!

Running a brand new HP desktop machine. I've been using it for about a week with no problems ... until today.

Certain programs are acting like they aren't launching, but at about 5-10 minutes later, they finally launch. Even the Recycle Bin took about 5 minutes to come up. However, Firefox launches immediately.

4GB of RAM
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Processor @ 3.00 GHz
64 bit

Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!

Time to look into msconfig and see what you have in the Start file.
Un check everything but AV and software you want to launch at startup.

Launch the recycle bin and then Task Manager > Processes. Maybe you can see what's turning in rounds. I would also have a look into the Event Viewer. Maybe you can discover some unusual errors.

Getting ready to try that. Left the NVIDIA display driver and Avast running. Reboot inc.

There's a spike in performance under task manager when I click the Recycle Bin, however, the spike in CPU drops immediately and the Recycle Bin still does not load. I'm waiting for it to come up in about 3 minutes from now ...

I went into MSconfig and disabled the start processes with the exception of the display driver and the avast AV.

442 errors in the past hr under the Event Viewer.

"The device, \Device\Harddisk3\DR3, has a bad block."

A lot of them are similar to this.

Disconnect from the web and dsiable Avast also. Often the AV program plays an act.

For that I would run a chkdsk /f in an elevated (run as admin) Command Prompt. Note the blank in front of the "f".

I've disabled the avast, but I can't terminate the program from the background. It states that I do not have permission- even though I'm the administrator.

Thanks. I've got that set to run at next restart.

As for the displaying of recycle bin, that isn't a problem, it just takes about 4-5 minutes to launch. I'm using that as a reference to see if the problem is fixed.

One of my programs for work isn't launching and when I install a program, it won't even post to my start up menu, desktop, or quick launch ... even when I specify it to.

Thanks for the help! I'll continue to follow your suggestions.

If you think it is worth persuing this, you could temporarily uninstall Avast. But use this uninstaller: avast! Uninstall Utility

I have 5 machines at the office that are using the same computer/ win 7, etc. This is the only one with this problem.

So I have my doubts that it is avast.

OK, fair enough. But that may be the only one with a disk problem. Did you run chkdsk /f

There is apparently a bigger problem on your disk. Do you remember what the result of the chkdsk was - especially this part:

Uncheck all startup items from Start --> Run --> type MSCONFIG --> Uncheck everything on startup except for stuff you need (perhaps antivirus).

SOLVED.

Thank you everyone for your assistance.

After replacing the computer with an exact model and seeing the same symptom, I narrowed it down to the Seagate External Backup drive. It was causing the delay and other numerous problems.
