Hi, and excuse me if my english is abit scruppy.

I have a problem with my ATI card that I just can't how to fix. I've googled for God knows how many hours without results that works for me. The problem is whenever Im gaming (it's the only way the GPU gets proper load) the screen freezes, turns black and usually exits the game. I get the message that "Display driver has stopped working and has been succsessfully recovered."
It's kinda annoying because I can't play a single game for more than 10-30 minutes without problems or crashing.

My OS is Windows 7 x64.

ASUS P7P55D
Intel i5
Asus HD5850
Corsair XMS3 CL9 2x2 GB
Chieftec Super Series 650W

I've tried:
-Setting the clockspeed on my GPU 20mhz down
-Using only one memorybrick
-Different catalyst drivers from 9.something to 10.1
-Drivercleanup
-Formating

None of these has been giving me any results at all.. Please help me.

Hi CptZiggy. Welcome to SevenForums.:)

Have you considered the possibility that your Card may be overheating?

Here is an ATI Tool which will allow you to monitor your Temp and fan speeds.

ATITool - Overclocking utility for ATI and NVIDIA cards

You may find that inadequate cooling may be the cause of your problem.

Hope this helps.;)

Yes I've checked the tempratures. The fan is doing it's work.

Idle temp is around 30C, and whenever Im gaming it's around 50-60.

these quirky issues are popping up all over the place with the 5 series cards.....:(

many ppl find (unfortunately) reinstalling windows with the card installed is helping, if you've tried all the drivers & the problem persists this may be worth a shot..

the H/W in general is proving to be ok...... so its just a case of finding a configuration this card likes...

i myself run a dual-boot setup with the HD5970, but only one of the w7 installs will game :sarc:, the other simply gives me a BSOD whenever i run anything graphically challenging...

yet i know its not a H/W problem as the other install has STELLAR performance, others are seeing the same.

currently buying into ATI, also nets you a whole bunch of compatibility issues.... so patience is required when going ''Team Red''

have you tried these drivers.. 8.70 RC2

also.....ppl are finding the VRAM on these cards is overheating & causing the drivers to fail..... ppl have been placing ram sinks on the backs of the cards, it seems to help (though im not saying this is the problem)

:)

its a continual ''work in progress''....
Thanks for fast replies!

I've tried reinstalling windows several times with no luck.
I will try the RC2 drivers,

Just as I was typing this it happend.. Usually is only under load, but now apperently in windows aswell.
The screen went black, som weird textures and black again.. had to reboot to make it go away.

I'll let you know if I get any luck with the RC2 drivers.

After installing 8.70 RC2 I played for a half an hour without any problems.. Had to stop, but I will try more later.
If it continues without any problems I guess it's solved, but I have my doubts. I've played for more than 30 minutes before and thought the problem was solved.

Will update it later.

In my opinion the driver creates the problem. Remove all the driver even catalyst and let windows to install it's own driver. may that help

ok....has the card got good airflow..?? all around it.

i'd open a support ticket with the card vendor, let them know what your seeing.... they may think its worth returning.

usually software is the culprit from my experience with these cards, but there are a few defective units, you've reinstalled windows, run all available drivers & still the problem persists, i dont suppose there's another machine you can test the card in before you start an RMA..???

perhaps it just doesn't like your H/W config full stop.

if you do RMA & the new card does exactly the same your gonna be really upset.

but as i say start up a ticket & see what they suggest, b/c (as you know) there's only so much you can try until your left with the H/W as the problem :(

Yeah, the card got good airflow, and the temp is pretty good all over.
However if there's nothing wrong with the card there's nothing they can do.

So im stuck with a $400 GPU I can't even use..

Called the store I bought the GPU, they had nothing to say except I had to send it back for them to check if there's something wrong with it. (Which is probably isnt.)

The problem doesnt occur in Windows XP, but then COD MW2 freezes another way, with the sound aswell which makes me have to do a reboot.

even-though it seems to be S/W related, you've still payed for a card which isnt working.

if you cant get this sorted with the manufacturer, the sub vendor will be obligated to refund your money at the very least.

The same problem happens in x32bit og Windows 7 if I remember correctly, but not in
XP.

And I kinda wanna run a x64bit system because I want to use all my RAM.

You're probably blue screening because you still have CCC installed. Time to start from scratch.

Download and install Driversweeper:
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Remove Ati Catalyst install Manager from through control panel Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

Boot into safe mode, run DriverSweeper and then Analyze/ clean all the ATI files.

Boot normally and install either 9.12 or the 10.1 RC2 drivers.

If your issue still exists, then it does sound like the card itself may have a problem.

CODM W2 freezing is another issue all together

When did you run driversweeper? before or after letting Windows update install the drivers?

Have you checked your RAM with memtest86+ by any chance?
