Solved HDD cloning time

Could my windows background, which is set to change every ten seconds be the problem?
I doubt it. Cloning is just iffy. That is also my experience.

Clean install is more straight forward and less frustrating :)

Not in my experience. Dealing with just the M$ updates is far more frustrating, not to mention time consuming.

This thread in addition to ACHI blocking installation - Windows 7 Help Forums
makes me think you might have disk problems.

Were you trying to preserve your multi-boot by not following the disk wiping steps from Troubleshoot Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums?

This is self-defeating since the one step which works more than all others to overcome installation problems is wiping the disk with Clean Command. Over the years the only cases I remember which fail to get Win7 installed are those who refuse to do this, while all others get it installed eventually.

I would test the hard drive now using HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, then wipe it to create a full disk Primary Active partition from Troubleshoot Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums upon which to run a full Disk Check.

When you are ready to continue with the troubleshooting in the other thread then we will get it installed as we have in every one of tens of thousands of cases we've helped with here where there is cooperation and all steps are followed with none skipped, because the skipped step often proves to be the solution.

I can run the Windows MGAdiag but I can't attach it, it is a waste of time anyway because this copy of Windows was sent to me direct from Microsoft in Dublin. I use hardware switching to run multiple OS's so there cannot be any interaction. The common factor is the BIOS but that works with 5 different operating systems with no problems. The new ssd works fine with Mint 17.1 64bit but that's not what I bought it for. SMART monitoring does not show any problems either with the ssd or the hdd with Windows on it. I will run the HD Diagnostic tomorrow.

So why don`t you do that ?

Just put windows on the ssd, keep the 1000 other OS`s on the hardd rive.

You would have been done weeks ago and enjoying your ssd ;)

Depends on how you deal with them :/
Install only Important updates in the beginning
Review the optional and recommended ones after picking out only the ones that apply to your usage/ devices,
No one ever died by skipping a optional update ;)
I like clean installs they are awesome :p

I disagree. In all of my installs I select all Important and Optional Updates except for Bing or an obviously outdated IE update. Many of these are vital patches needed to make sure hardware or software runs correctly. For example you may have Net Framework show up because a program is detected that requires it. If you don't install these Updates then these programs or hardware will not run correctly and you'll wonder why.

The problems with WIndows Update are one in a million. We may think they're greater because by nature we see the problems here. The only problems I have with them are having them bunch up on the Shut Down Button with a ! which can also jam them up if you're trying to run them from the Windows Update Control Panel. So its good to always check if you have a ! on the Start menu Shutdown button and if so stop what you're doing to Restart, check if they're cleared and if not do a full Shut Down since some want only a Shut Down. Then you can go back to Check for Updates and install the rest.

In the rare case that Windows Updates cause problems, simply System Restore to before the Update or uninstall it in Windows Updates>View Installed Updates. Then try installing it again and if it won't stabilize report it here in Updates forum or open a Support Case on Windows Updates website via email.

While I read about Windows Updates messing up this and that, I'd like to add I have never personally experienced this in thousands of installs I've done and helped with.

Things are looking up, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Why am I suddenly hopeful? Well, when I turned on the pc, I got a cpu cooling fan warning, so I disconnected everything, took the side off and checked out the fan, and thought I might as well move the ssd cable to sata port 1. The W10 is now in port 5. Better still, use a new cable. Feeling very optimistic at this point, I have carried out a clean load of W7 ult 64 which I had wanted all along, loaded lan drivers and then straight to Windows updates. So far it has installed 178 including IE11 and graphics.

Update, W10 will not run in port 5 so it may well be down to a sata port being faulty.

You'll need to set it as Primary HD and to boot first in BIOS setup to even test if it works, or use the one time Boot menu. I'd want an SSD in Sata 1.

Checking for overheating and cables are in the Troubleshooting steps.

Everything in device manager is now running, I had to run software for two separate usb3 controllers. The hdd for W10 in sata port 5 is not seen in the bios although when I was having the trouble, the ssd was seen. No matter, I'm about to retire XP so I will have a spare port.
