So i never thought id actually run out of room on my 500GB HDD, but i guess i have...? ha.

anyway, before i got my ssd i had bought a WD 500GB Black. and that was the boot drive and everything. after i got my SSD, obviously my SSD became my boot drive and the 500GB became storage.

but now im in a pickle. what should i do?

1) buy another 500GB or 1TB and have 3 total drives (the new drive would sit idle in the system almost 24/7)
2) buy a 1 or 2TB HDD and move all my stuff from my current to the new one and just take the old one out and keep as backup or sell it? (no waste in power, and wont just be idle in my system 24/7)

im thinking im going to go with #2 because i really have no reason for 3 drives. but the question comes down too which drive should i get? WD black or WD blue. this is for all storage 3 programs (Premier, After effects, Photoshop), and all my games. i also move all the cache from those programs to the HDD to save writes on the SSD.

is there really any noticeable performance difference between the 2 especially as storage drives?

I would go with the bottom choice if it were me because while the 2 drives are just about identical; the bottom one has a 5-year warranty which could come in handy(hopefully not) if you decide to go with that one. And yea i too would move all the stuff to 2 drives instead of 3 as there really is no reason to have 3 unless you are either running more than one operating system; or are possibly using the system as a server.

ya im thinking #2 and really a blue drive. ive been reading, and as a boot drive, there really is no "noticeable" performance difference between the 2. so as a storage drive, there will literally be no difference. so for me, the only benefit to the black is the better warranty. but, thats why im buying WD

ill have to watch prices. if the 2TB black goes on sale, ill jump on it. but as of now, il leaning towards the blue.

if i get the 2TB, that would mean 1.5TB of just unused space. but if i get the 1TB, that means 500GB of unused space. which with as many games as i have, 500 is a lot.

ya so im thinking the 1TB Blue unless the black goes on sale. then i could just sell mine.

I would say get what fits your needs

Unless you need to do massive back ups 500gb to 1tb should be fine

I was interested in getting a super size 2-3 TB drive and there is no need my programs don't even fill 15% of the hard drive most of the space being used is for games

The best thing for you to do is dedicate that TB to games and maybe one for your photos since you make videos and have programs to edit and change so in that regard you need some room

Just get one for the stuff you use the most honestly you should do what i did and dedicate a couple 500's and a couple TBs and label them for what you need example C/OS D/Steam and Live E/Programs and Orgin F/Haven't decided J/Back up My Book Drivers and some programs to install
The Black looks good should grab two

Likewise I would highly suggest jumping to either a 2 or the 3TB drives in a 7200 rpm with 64gb of cache. I would then use the 500gb drive for a critical back up drive.

I already have a separate backup drive that 320gb. It has about 4 system images of my C drive and all of my created final videos. About 99.5% of what's on that 500gb is games. The only programs I have are the editing tools. What I'm thinking is that the 1tb is fine because the stuff that's on it now its probs going to he old and I won't want to play them anymore. So I'll just uninstall.

I'll have to watch prices. Maybe I will shoot for the 2tb even tho its overkill.

You will fill up 500GB if that is all your using and just downloading tons of crap and leaving it

i have 2x 500GB and 1x650GB +my 128GB SSD I have yet to fill everything up everything i do goes straight to Disc after that it's outski .....


I just feel that if he is only using for games and what not he only needs a 500GB because the fact he can uninstall a lot of them too and just keep the folders with the save points

It does not hurt to have 1TB you can partition it 2TB can slice it into 4x 500GB if you choose or some other odd number

Buy the largest drive you can afford, you fill them up sooner or later. You should have redundant backup drives with one kept off site.

In the end like i said before; you probably cant go wrong with either choice. Even with 3tb; you might fill that eventually if you use big programs like cad programs or something else big like that.

I would get the biggest one you can afford and keep the other one in it. I too am getting close filling up my 500gb drive thanks to steam. I got like 116gbs left. I couldn't fit all my games if I start downloading and installing them all. I would go with a 2tb or 1tb should last you a while. Though I would keep that 500gb , I wouldn't sell it to be honest because in no time you will feel you will need it. I would keep it just in case.

Zero market for used drives other than cents on the dollar, better to save for rainy day or next build or multi drive external drive?

Nothing wrong with multiple drives like i showed in my screen shot hell i would install another and a SSD if i have a chance too

That 500 will always be needed so you should toss it in the mix and have fun with it

it would just sit idle in my PC the whole time. so unless the 1TB got full, it wouldent be used. but i think ill just keep it just encase.
