Hi,
Best to get a new hdd according to your own post
Are you copying to another drive with failure ?

HDD's die slowly and gives you time to transfer to a new
You can do a surface test using free mini tool but bottom line the hdd sounds like it is ding so I personally would not bother wasting time with it until all data is transferred to another hdd.

You can`t fix it, as Mike says get a new drive.

Then hook that old drive back up and try to copy your data over to the new drive.

I agree, the drive is dying.
How can you have so important data and you don't have a backup?

When the PC freezes, did you check on the led for HDD, is it blinking, stable, or no light.

In this way, you can see if it is still running.

HDD is one of the problem, but you should also check on the source HDD running or not, also target HDD.
If the light flicking /blinking, this is said to be it is reading from the source HDD.
If the light is stable, this is writing to the HDD.

So you need to check and confirm which HDD may cause it to failed.

While you are transferring the data, look at the process on the dialog box on the rate of transfer.

How, you can do another test to confirm which is the problem.
This time, do not use huge file, take a smaller files.
Do the copy alone, without any other programs running.
If the copying is 0 transfer rate, it may be the target HDD also have problem, that is unable to write.
If the light disappeared, then the source HDD may not able to read anymore, this is the source HDD issue.

To me, this is a best guess situation.
Sometime it may not be much of a reason.
Of course you need to know how old is the both HDD.
If beyond 3 yrs and you are using it daily doing heavy task that you are force them to their max.
This can be said as this 3 yrs HDD may failed anytime.

Next time, try to copy some smaller file size, instead of high storage.
This is because, if the bigh files or total files size is too great, it required time and computer resource.
This is to avoid the danger should at any time, such as freeze, you files may be corrupted easily.
Hence not only the source HDD but also the target HDD.

Just my view. after having destroying too many HDD flash drive, etc.

asalaam alaikum! Brother of Ibrihim, do not run any HD diagnostics until after you copied your data folders and files from the problem [source] HD onto your target HD -- work accurately and quickly; your data is important as you said. After you have copied everything you can, on your target HD, check some files out in each folder, make sure the vast majority [if not everything] made it safely, can be called up by their parent program.

Knowing exactly what power supply and it's specs would be very helpful.

A weak or poor power supply can cause all kinds of problems including hard drive problems.
