Sound Card |Headphone recommendations

Hi, my headphones are done. Can you guys recommend any good headphones which support 5.1/7.1 audio, price range is £100.

In near future, I'll be ditching onboard audio and will be getting Asus Xonar DX.

For music or gaming. It seems to me if your asking for 5.1 or 7.1 on a headphone than it's gaming. Audio I know in spades, gaming not so much. I use AKG 701's and love them........no I LOVE them ! But on a budget the best phones for the money are Grado SR60's. Grado Prestige SR 60 - headphones - Ear-cup, Binaural

I use to have these, which lasted 3-4 years

SteelSeries – SteelSeries 5Hv2

then went for these, which lasted like 2 years and right speaker is gone (still using same)

what about the ones which got USB, are they any good?

Just realized, I got only one pci slot available due to 5770's in crossfire and i can't fit d2x in there so have to go with single slot card. Got two options now

Again this is why you look to respected brands. Zalman makes cases and coolers, SteelSeries makes.......? Steel? When looking for quality audio seek a quality audio manufacturer......IMHO.

The Senn's are sweet but expensive, likely out of the range? The Astro's are nice as well and I didn't see a price. Seems like these things are going to come down in price as more hit the market. Again I think that going with a known headphone manufacturer is smart. Maybe you can give me an idea what those two go for in the UK? Astro's don't provide spec's and I'm not sure I believe what I'm reading on the Senn's going down to 14 hertz ! But I've owned Senn's and they are amazing but all in all it's the AKG's that have me in sonic bliss but again that's for music and gaming and music are vastly different beast !

I have the Logitech G35's but they are USB only and have their own onboard soundchip.
I am not sure what they cost there, but in the USA they retail for $130 and regularly go on sale for as low as $65. I bought mine for $65-20% with free shipping, came out to $52.

I have been pleased with them, watched the Dark Knight on Bluray when I got them and after a couple of minutes of watching the movie, I forgot I was wearing headphones. Sounded like I was in a room filled with speakers.

Headphones are subjective, so I would recommend buying them from someplace that you can return them if you aren't satisfied, or borrow a friends pair if you know someone with them.

Turtle Beach is for £79.50
Sennheiser PC 333D is for £106.00

and Astro A40 is £194.50

now need to pick either turtle or sennheiser, both are in my price range

Honestly there are NO good phones for gaming that are 5/7.1. The ability of phones to reproduce good direction finding sound are OK at best. I only use phones when on vent or teamspeak. Then it is for the communication aspect of game play and not sound. I have tried the turtle beach and the zalman and favor the zalman best but both are just OK. For gamming phones I favor/use Sennheiser HD 485's because the all around sound reproduction for gaming is pretty good, just not surround which is made for open air speakers IMHO.

Sennheiser's would be my best guess without hearing all the candidates. Or you could consider two pair, the Grado's I recommended at first (great phones for the money!) and the Turtle Beach's or Logitech's cause there cheap.

One other feature you may want to keep in mind when looking for headphones is noise reduction.
I was fortunate to get a pair of way over priced Bose Quite comfort headphones for my birthday a few years ago but I'd never recommend to anyone spending 300 bucks on a set.

edit if you didn't live so far away I wouldbe glad to send you the 15 or so pairs I have that need some kind of wire repair I got when I purchased a pallet of computer parts from a closing store. Since I'm either going tothrough them a away or give them away befroe I move

This is where you find comments like: They were great while they worked.......Headphones are not just speakers for the ears but very technical devices that if not constructed properly will fail. Headphone manufacturers understand and have designed for comfortable wear and durability. Stay with major headphone makers and you will have the best results.
