Hi there

As an old fashioned engineer I still buy into the adage "If it ain't broke don't fix it". If your hardware works just fine just let it run.

For running a simple file server XP runs OK -- don't connect it directly with the internet and you don't need to worry about security. I've some old kit that ONLY runs on XP --some of this kit would cost me over 25,000 USD to upgrade / replace and usually the modern software is HIDEOUS compared with the older stuff -- more bloat added and the interfaces usually dumbed down horribly.

Running XP as a VM works best --that way you can still use HUGE modern monitors -- I run a small Debian host with XP under VMware workstation - and the XP Virtual machine will probably STILL be around long after I've got rid of Windows 8.1 !!!!

There's still one or two hobbyist XP -64 bit sites around if you want to mess around with that OS too. Seems that a load of people will still keep writing drivers etc for XP long after Ms has abandoned it.

The VM solutions should enable both 32 and 64 bit XP versions to run for YEARS yet.

The only problem I foresee for the moment is the infamous year 2038 problem that plagues 32-bit software.

I have XP Home SP3 on the desktop machine (along with Vista) and it will be remaining there for the foreseeable future.

I also have XP Pro SP2 in V-Box on this machine (host is Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit, with the Update 1 preview installed).

It, also, will be remaining (tho will be updated, only installed 2 days ago).

I own and run many OSes, many of which are older than XP, so I'm not
particularly worried about lack of support.

I liked XP. I prefer win 7 for ease of use. Vista sucked. It did then and it does now. and win 8 it.... it...... *face palm*
