Help! 5.1 Speakers

I bought myself a brand new 5.1 surround sound set and I've been frustrated ever since...
When I try to set the speakers up using the "configure" option, the setup only gives me the option of stereo (2 speakers). I'm not sure whether I'm cursed with a crappy sound card or whether win 7 is bugging...

Could you fill in your system specs in full, it just makes it easier to find a solution to the problem a bit quicker
