Solved Help! BSOD using torrent clients (utorrent, Txati)

Hey ZigZag,

Thx for the reply. BEen running without Kaspersky (used kasp. removal tool) and MSE installed 2 days now. Improved stability a liottle an extended time between BSOD. But after that and some driver verifier runs, the stop code changed from 0xd1 to 0xa not quite shure what i did to make the transition. Nearly finished with Back up, win7 cd is ready to format.
I was wondering will this help? What i mean is: I reinstall baseically the same software ( since im not quite sure which driver cause d the problem) and drivers (since all my drivers were basically up to date), how likely is it to get the same BSOD errors again? If revert my system in much the same state, but in systematical manner and without unecessary software, will my system likely be stable?

Thx!

May very well be a repeat but at least you will start with a clean system and if you install the same software you will find out which driver is causing the problem.

If you are still crashing you may need to do a clean install at some point.

Might want to try a different torrent client, re-installing Java, etc. But in the end I see a repair install or clean install unless you have a backup to restore from prior to the problem.

Hey ZigZag thx for checkin in again, did u check the .dmp file in post #23? posts after #22 were made right after clean install, i deleted windows and reinstalled. Only the most basic stuff was installed b4 using torrent client. and i still got crashes, not matter the internet security software and without any. Not having internet security software prolongued time between crashes though. +I installed alcohol 120% which according to some of your posts is notorious BSOD! So now Im uninstalling everything again and reinstalling. Going to use utorrent with only (chipset, network, graphics and audio drivers) the most basicdrivers.
Im really surprised there is no solution yet, if u google torrent client and BSOD u get a ton of threads and posts in many different forums, some having the issue for a long time. Im surprised torrent client developpers havnt looked into this !!! and checked for options of tweaking or compatibility! dunno what to say this is to mysterious for me. Everythoing worked fine for me(for a long time also), then around win7 SP1 (a month ago for me ) these crashes just started happening! no idea why hadnt really changed anything suddenly BSOD! and from then on.... i dont know what happened. This has to be some Network driver, torrent protocoll compatibility issue. Some network stuff was changed in SP1 maybe, some new default setting? i dont know and it seems that my .dmps dont hold any good inforamtion!

thx for hearing my pain :D

3-Jraid.sys (your raid driver) is from 2008 and needs updating.

After all the above we may be able to find the true cause.

Hey ZigZag!
Ok second clean Install! No More problems! Still using Norton 360. No more Alcohol (magiciso instead, but had that on the initial system aswell). Didnt install any raid drivers and didnt Install any Network drivers. Other than that, everythiongs the same but working again. I dont have Crashes using Torrents anymore,(using utorrent again). So im not really sure what did the trick but, I do think Deamon Tools and Alcohol, the spdt.sys driver u mentioned had a part to play,(the main part IMHO) then i think the newest Network drivers were causing problems. So for all of you with Marvel Network cards, try not to get the newest v11.45 instead use the windows one (from 2009). The problem wasnt Norton or Kaspersky, uninstallign them didnt help with the initial system and installing them on fresh system didnt hurt (they did play some role though because disabling or uninstalling them increased timespan between BSODs).
Even if these things were the root of the problem, once installed, uninstalling them ( stpd.sys(DT,Alc), Marvel driver, Norton or kasp, raid, VPN client etc. didnt help. Updating drivers didnt helpw. Uninstalling software didnt help. The only thing that worked was a Clean Install ( and only the second time over)! What do you think ZigZag? if you had to make a top 3 causes for Torrent related BSOD what would it be?
Mine: 1. Network Drivers (roll back or update)
2. Antivir/spyware, Firwalls (norotn,Kaspersky MCafee) (uninstall)
3. sptd.sys (DT, Alc.120) (uninstall)
If nothing of this sort helps Clean install is one secure way to go!

P.S. should i mark the thread as solved? I mean iddint solve the problem really, not sure of the cause or fix(except reinstalling everything)!

Causes vary from system to system. Some of the biggest are
1-Malware. Biggest cuases of BSOD's only, not how well they preform on malware.
Kaspersky, Norton, McAffee, Zone alarm, and avast.

2-Drivers
Sptd.sys, Virtualbus drivers, etc.

3_overclocking. Just dont

Good luck and let us know if you need help

You do a clean install and it works for a bit. Perhaps you install Norton and it crashes?

Hey Guys, sorry if im being cumbersome and thx for your persistence!
I know about ZIgZag achivements ive read a lot of posts by him, checked his profile and he always trys to help!

Its just that ive tried running the system without any antivir and with MSE, as i already wrote. The initial system(before the 2 clean installs) i was running Kaspersky IS 2011, uninstalled it, still BSODs, used MSE still BSODs (post #12), reinstalled kasp. tried driver verifier and uninstalled Deamon Tools still BSODS (this time the Stop code Changed tho 0xa)

(then ZigZag wrote i should at least unistall malware app and test b4 clean install , but i had already done that and crashes persisted (posts #12 and #21)

on the second system(before the last clean install), the system really only had basic drivers and ( i know iknow pls dont kill me) Alc 120 and Norton. I didnt know alcohol used the same driver as Deamon tools then , immidiatly uninstalled it when zigzag told me. and got rid of norton 360 (post# 24).(i installed it in the first place cause i thought maybe the issue is Kasp. only) Newayz.. intervalls between BSODs increased, but BSODS still happened.(post #25)

Then ZigZag told me to clean Install, but this was a clean Install. Still... Clean Installed again.(Post #29). 2nd Sytem:
Didnt install any raid drivers and didnt Install any Network drivers(used win7 ones). But Norton 360, since i thought if not using it didnt solve the problem, ican install it right?

System ran smooth for 2days... Thought it was mysteriously fixed.... and BAM (post #31) and since then same shit.

So basically ive tried running with all the recomandations by ZigZag (Thx again), it helped in the sense that crashes were less freequent but i still got crashes(same for MSE). But i cant run without an Antivir... thats suicide.. right?

I checked my RAM and tried chkdsk, no errors ( i thought it could be a memory problem since most of the time the crash occurs when adreess 0x00000014 is accesed ( at least thats what i think th BSC1 stands for)

Using Bluescreenview i saw that the only thing always listed in red in all the dmps is ntkrnlpa.exe. ( of course in most were netio.sys, ndis.sys, tcp.sys, tunnel.sys, basically all the network drivers possible :P).

Will give deleting Norton another try.... Thx very much guys, i really appreciate that u keep following up, gives me Hope :)!

Not to worry. We are in this till its fixed (or you kill it).

Norton is virtually impossible to remove once installed. Sometimes even using teir installer remnents remain.

The only effective way I have found is to do a clean install.

Are we still talking about BSODs that occur during torrent downloads? This thread is sounding more and more like a general BSOD problem (not limited to torrents).

If it is still only a torrent issue, did the OP ever try to limit global maximum allowed connections in uTorrent - that often fixes network driver crashes since some drivers just can't handle too many simultaneous TCP connections, and that's what torrent clients do (due to the way the BitTorrent protocol works).

Hey,
quick update,

havnt had time to take uninstalling measures yet! will let you know when i do, busy week ftm so its probably gonna be the weekend!

@corazon, yes its still only when i dl torrents! Theres no other problem with my system other then that. No Freezes, no BSOD (100%), but the minute i use torrentz a BSOD is a sure thing. yes tried limiting connecitons aswell, at least i think so.

The default setting in utorrent under Optins->Settings->Bandwith-> # of Connections
is max. # Connecitons = 200
max. # of peers = 50
# of uploadslots = 4

So i have tried using
max. # Connecitons = 50 // 50 // 30
max. # of peers = 50 // 25 // 10
# of uploadslots = 4 // 4 // 1

in different runs still got BSODs. btw. is there any danger for my hardware if i kwwp getting these BSODs? dont think so right? + ive run out of things to test downloading on :P!
Disableing all the firewalls and Norton helps, less longer dl times b4 BSOD. (Sometimes it takes 3 hours sometimes 10 mins, without torrents my system can run for days ( until i switch it off)).

Thx

Ok i think i found a workaround! For all those that Have the same problems: BSOD(0xd1) caused by d/l torrents.
Still dont know what the acctual problem was, or what caused the crashes but for all those where, deleting or switching third party Internet Securities or deleting Virtual drive drivers or clean install doesnt work. Use utorrent 1.5 and install with XP compatability. Problem solved no more crashes(at least until now).

Thx again to those who helped!
