Help! I did something wrong!

I guess I just don't get this... is Windows 7 so buggy that if you modify one file the system goes bezerk and can't boot anymore? Ubuntu does not use "drive letters" like Windows does, so it's physically incapable of something like that.

What advice would you have for a fresh install... besides just doing it? There's not a way to get the "Programs" menu besides using Windows, is there? (I mean the stuff that shows up in add/remove programs, not necessarily the shortcuts)

Anyway, I have a couple more things I'm gonna try once I get back from class... and I'm hoping at least one works. One of them involves copying the System Reserved boot partition to another hard drive, then erasing it, and using Startup Repair to put that stuff back... hopefully since it could detect where Windows 7 is installed, it'll boot up again. Or, I can install Windows 7 to another partition, see what the drive letters show up as, then mess with the registry a bit to switch them around.

But seriously, good grief, who woulda thought that modifying a couple of files would break an entire OS?

Have you re-installed since you "broke task manager" or tricked your Office install?

You do quite a bit of experimenting with the inner workings of the OS and applications. But you don't run the Restore service and you only recently learned about SFC.

The evidence presented suggests that "modifying a couple of files" is not what broke your install.

This is just a waste of time...
