Not a big Linux user, albeit sometimes if you use upper case with any log in this can be a problem. The only thing I can really recommend is to reinstall and make sure that you write down both the user name and the password down before entering into the OS; this way you will hopefully have no further problems.

Good Luck. . ., and BTW, "Welcome to the Seven Forums."

Welcome to Seven Forums billog. I am running Mint 14 in a VM. I only have one account on Mint. But it gave me a user and Admin account. I only entered 1 password. I have found that on occasion it would not let me log into the user account, but I could log into the Amin account. Just a suggestion as I'm sure you've tried this. And, Lee is correct it can be case sensative.

Linux is case sensitive.
"Blah.jpg" is different to "blah.jpg", "BLah.jpg", "blAh.jpg", etc.

Windows is case sensitive with regards to passwords (you get a warning if "Caps Lock" is on when you try to log in).

Is this happening during the install (i.e. you haven't successfully installed Linux Mint yet)?

My friend's suggestion is to set the simplest allowable password and use that until you can determine what is happening.

Maybe it is a hardware issue.
Is your keyboard sticking or key bouncing?

Additional
My version of Linux Mint requires me to type in my User Name AND Password.
