hi all!

I tried to install Linux mint 14 along with Windows7 Professional on Compaq 420 laptop using UUI (universal usb installer).

During installation of mint it did not show the option of 'installing alongside existing OS', so i went with 'something else' option at the end.
Freed up space and installed it in my second partition of 100GB with root, swap and home.

Finally after restarting it showed the grub and linux is working fine, but when i try to boot windows it gives an error 'cx0000224' stating that it cannot load windows boot manager and try putting the image cd or installation cd of windows or contact manufacturer in case of not having the installation cd.

I do not have the installation cd anymore but luckily have saved my work externally.

I think i messed up big time, Pl. let know if there is a way to revert back and get my original windows software running again?

thx,..ucma

From the Linux Mint forum.
you used the Linux partitioner to re-size the NTFS partition,
then that can often mess us the windows file structure.

it's generally recommended, to use the windows Disk Management program:
http://www.disk-partition.com/resource/ ... dows7.html
to re-size the NTFS partition first, in order to get some 'free space'.

then use the Linux installer's 'something else' option to point to that free space.

so now, in order to repair the windows boot loader,
you will need a windows install disk, to boot from,
in order to repair the windows boot loader:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32523/ho ... -problems/
then, after that, you may have to repair the Linux Grub Boot Loader, as well

finally, are you using Mint 14
icon_question.gif
or Mint 17 ?.
as Mint 14 is now obsolete.

Looks like you already got your answer from the Linux Mint forums. Anyways first you'll have to have the Windows 7 CD and repair the Windows boot manager than repair grub for Linux Mint. First things first when installing linux you have to be very very careful when messing with Windows partitions as you can run into the same error you just got. Its better to size the partition inside windows then install Linux.

On Mint, open the command prompt and type:
sudo update-grub

It will redo the grub config file and normally it includes windows boot

If the Windows MBR is corrupted that command won't work. Windows still won't boot because grub as over written the MBR for Windows. He'll have to repair the Windows MBR then repair grub.

Don't agree.
MBR is now taking the sequence to the Linux boot loader (Grub) instead of Windows boot loader.
It doesn't mean that Windows boot loader is corrupted.
Grub can search the disk for Windows boot loader and add it to the boot option.

sorry for the late reply as i was having connectivity problems for the local area.

as written earlier i do not have and could not have an installation disk. so in that mattar i presume i would rather opt for a total installation of linux...and that i would rather prefer.

I would move to an updated version of mint14 later, but for the time being can i have a resource on how to completely clean my system and install mint14 from usb(as to be honest i have it saved as .iso and still do not rely on internet connection for long)?

would be a great help.

do not deserve it but urgency is requested...ucma
