Help Me Set Up Wireless and Wired Network on New House

Thanks guys! So where exactly do I put the router in that PS3 room:huh:

The glass is a 8mm Blindex glass, no metal I think.
The wall has a little bit of metal structure.
My internet speed will be 3.2 or 8Mbps.

Please edit the picture with the router in, thanks again!

This is what I suggested before:

The router is normally placed near the DSL modem so try and have the DSL installed when the router can be centrally placed in the heavy coverage area. If you can get CAT5e run from the router to the PS3 and Wii that will provide the best performance for them.

Still a good idea....

Yes I can put cable on the PS3 but not the Wii, let me ask you a question:
The DIR-855 have WAN port why do I need a DSL modem:huh: can't I just connect the RG-11 cable in the DIR:huh:

Please, edit the picture with the router in :)

Thank you again.

The DIR isn't a DSL router so it can't terminate the DSL connection. That's what the DSL modem does. The modem basically takes the DSL (RJ11) as input and outputs an Ethernet connection (RJ45) that you feed to the routers WAN port.

Why can't you run a cable to the PS3? I seem to remember you saying it had a GigE ethernet port.

So, why the router have a RG-11 port? If I need to have a modem anyway.
I will put the DSL-500B with the DIR-855 if needed.

The question still remain, where exactly do I put the router at the PS3 room?

Edit: I forgot to say thanks! Thank you!

The DIR-855 doesn't have an RJ11 for DSL. Just RJ45's for ethernet.

Ok, I got it. The Wii needs a USB adapter. You'll have to get one that is supported by the Wii. You just can't go and buy any adapter. It has to work with the Wii.

BTW: You're welcome!

The router should go on a desk (Good), or shelf (Better). What ever you do: Not on the floor! You want good wireless signal so place it somewhere where the antennas are in the clear. Wireless likes open space.

Can you show me a link with a Wii Wireless N adapter?

The DWA-160 adapters are for the notebooks, not for the Wii. :)

Is this a good place for the router? Please show me where.

Maybe I missed something. Do you need to Wii to connect to the network or is it just by itself?

WAN = Wide Area Network. That's the port on the router that connects to the RJ45 port on DSL modem. The modem will have two ports: RJ11 for the DSL and RJ45 for the router. You need the DSL modem to "convert" the DSL to ethernet.

I don't have the picture at the moment so I can't edit it for router placement.

Like I said before:

The router is normally placed near the DSL modem so try and have the DSL installed where the router will give the best signal for your laptops. That means where you want the best coverage.

I see the Wii has built in wireless. It's not 802.11n but it should still work, just not as fast. You may not even notice it.

The router location should be ok. Try to place it about 6 feet up. Like a small shelf or something up on the wall. I doubt you'll need the AP at this point. Don't spend the money if you don't need to.

Good Luck! I'll be away for a few hours, back later tonight.

I think 6 pages of discussion is enough for now. Time to implement and test. Like RBD said, use what you got and don't spend on things that are unesseary.

Sorry for all the trouble
But you can't say that. Sorry.

So this is what I will do:

Buying: I will buy the DIR-855 and the DWA-160 adapters also CAT5e cables or CAT6, depending of the price. :)

Implementing (router and modem): I will put the DIR-855 at the PS3 room with the DSL-500B (exactly where show the last photo). :)

Implementing (cables): Then I will implement the cables at the first, second, third and last room, also I will put cable at the PS3/Wii room and also at the office and hall. :)

More: I will run a cable at the PS3, Wii will be wireless. :)

That is all I can think about right now. What do you think? Nice right?
Thaank you guys again.

I'm not saying to halt all your plannings. You realised that what's "on paper" or in theory doesn't always equate to it working in practice? This is why you should start doing things in practice now, even if it means to connect the router and modem and testing that. You won't know what will work or what will not untill you test your plans.

Please, just answer what do you think about the router location and everything else, then I will put in practice when the time comes. :geek:

Position of the router there is very good as you would want your wireless network to be broadcasted with as little hinderance as possible. Obviously near the door is better than in a corner of the room even if the difference would be minimal.

As for cables, Cat 5e works.

Not sure why you need another AP, a wireless router has AP feature built in if you buy the right one. If your house is that big that you maight need another router, then it could be considered BUT have you TRY using just the one router (walk around the house with your laptop and see if you can connect)?

That is what I want to hear. You finely answered my question, thank you. And yes, I will only gonna buy the AP if needed. (I will buy the access point only if the signal is bad.)

Also, I will place the router more to the middle at the shelf, so the router will be at the center like you say. Right?
Thank you! :geek:
